Lots of security patches lately for pidgin. I wonder when they'll add some sort of encryption for saved user login info soon. :doubt:

Pidgin is pretty complex software with all the support for so many IM networks, so it's really no wonder it's getting its share of vulnerabilities. So, updates, updates.

If Firefox gives you 0 byte files whenever you try to download an exe, that might be caused by Firefox following Internet Explorer's security settings (well, technically they're the system's internet security settings, but most people think they're just IE's). If you have "Launching applications and unsafe files" set to disable in IE's security settings for the Internet zone, then Firefox won't be able to download exe files at all. But downloads can fail for many other reason as well, and occasional server flukes are entirely within the realm of possibility. :)
