the newest version .52 for some reason even after numerous boot time defrags the system files remain scattered everywhere on the driveo_O has anyone seen this issue and how did you fix it.. normally perfectdisk puts them all nice and neatly in around the middle of the drive where as on my drive they look like are thrown everywhere?? thoughts?? im going to uinstall and reinstall since the first time i installed it there was a error and i had to reboot and then install again.. but i doubt this will fix this issue. thanks for any help

    zfactor,

Out of interest, have you installed the WinXP SP3 update?

Here is a shot of my C: drive. I haven't done a boot-time defrag for a few days.

I notice that the MFT is always in about the same spot, and there are a lot of excluded files lumped togeher in the middle. The Stats page says their defragmentation is Zero, even though they aren't all contiguous.

Here it is again, immediately after boot time defrag (no online defrag)

Iguess this doesn't really tell us much, except that the files are not "all over the drive"; but they aren't perfectly contiguous either. I don't know why.

Maybe they need to change the name to "PrettyGoodDisk"

well i fixed it. btw i run vista not xp and i do have the sp1 for vista.

what i did to fix it.. turn off system restore ( i dont use it anyway ) delete shadow and backup copies, turn off paging file, stop prefetch service. restart. then run a defrag (i chose to consolodate free space this time). restarted to boot time defrag and let that run. after re boot i checked and everything was all lined up now.. restarted prefetch, paging file re-enabled. again i dont use system restore so i left it off.. restarted

ran another defrag this time did the normal one with perfect disk, again restarted running boot time once again checked once it hit windows and all is perfectly lined up with all system files together and nothing out of place.

not sure if all this was needed but it worked and now everything is all perfectly lined up..

In Windows XP/Vista, there are a few files/folders that cannot be moved, so any Defragmentation tool will be futile.

C:\System Volume Information\ cannot be defragged in Vista (in XP can be defragged with the VSS service stopped), http://www.raxco.com/support/kb_detail.cfm?kbid=704&prod=1&ver=2008.

C:\$Extend\$UsnJrnl:$J:$DATA cannot be defragged in Vista OR XP (can be saftely deleted using fsutils http://technet2.microsoft.com/windo...f4ba-4390-93be-72e23df03a671033.mspx?mfr=true)

    Cheers, Nick.

PS There is no need to mess about with pagefile, or prefetch.

well without doing the things i did it refused for some reason the first time it ran to move the page file or the system files.. they remained scattered.. why i dont know. now that they are in order they can seemingly be moved fine. not sure why but i know it worked

i also tried the agressive mode.. did not help the first time
