Well, that did not quite go according to plan. Rufus went fine and the time was quite short. When I booted the laptop via the usb, it worked and went into the installation procedure but then I got the message: Compatibility Report: The computer started using the windows installation media. Remove the installation media and restart your computer so that windows starts normally. Then insert the installation media and restart the upgrade. Do not select ICustom(advanced).....
Not sure how to restart an upgrade other than rebooting and would I not then be in the same position as before? I thought I might just need to doubleclick the autorun.exe on the stick and this got the installation started again but then it wanted to have my windows keys. While my system shows as validated, the key I had thought belonged to the laptop was not accepted.
I am trying my luck now using the Get Window 10 function without the rufus part but would prefer the other path to upgrade in particular if later I may want to start with a fresh installation.

    beethoven,

You should not boot the UFD..

You should still be OK to do this. You don't have to input a key at any stage.

I'm just running a Win7 to Win10 upgrade. Setup.exe was double clicked and these following Windows appeared...

Get important updates. I chose Not right now.
    License terms. Accept.
    Install.
The PC is currently copying files from the UFD to the HD.

But why is it asking me to input the license key? I don't think I noticed a "continue" or later button on that page. Just checked and I don't know how to proceed without entering the license key at that stage.

Silly me re the booting - just shows that you can never underestimate me with respect to finding a wrong option.

I've seen that issue before and it can mean you are using the wrong ISO.

I just finished my upgrade. Successful.

Can you check you have this ISO...

    Win10_1511_1_English_x64.iso

    Continuing from Post #28

The computer restarts and you see an Upgrading Windows screen with a big % progress. (You can remove the UFD if you desire)
    At 30% a restart
    At 75% a restart
At 100% you see Welcome to Windows 10 and you enter your login password
A few more screens and a restart. Windows 10 desktop.

mine says: Win10_1511_1_SingleLang_English_x64.iso - so maybe I will go back to the link you provided and build a new rufus

    Wrong ISO I'm afraid.

My upgrade just now took less than 15 minutes. SSDs are fast.

without the image I would have been quite stressed - this way, it's just experience and next time I will know better what to do. Anyway, the image was not yet necessary as so far nothing was installed. Hope to get there later when my downloads (with the correct iso) are available.
