For your browsers (Firefox, IE) there should be presets. For basic browsing you will most likely want to permit outbound to remote service/port 80, 443. Depending on your use you may also need to permit FTP, outbound to remote serive/port 21.

For MSN Messenger it all depends on what you features you are using. Basic features like checking hotmail and chat would require outbound to remote service/port 80, 443, 1863.

If you can post details on the prompts for the others along with what you are using them for it would help in defining a rule for you.

afaik, IE and Firefox should have presets. for programs that dont have presets i just allow all. i dont worry about it as a security issue since firewalls like ZA and Sygate do this for all programs.

Those would appear to be the presets for MSN. If you want to limit your rule(s) to only what you need, just uncheck the rules for the features you are not using.
