    In layman's terms this is good because ....

    Can you give me a real world application, what's it going to change, make better, etc?

    A real world application is.. less Flash, or no Flash.
    It's a codec aimed at being used with HTML5, and this being true (the story), free/open source and patent free.
    This means it can be widely deployed, with no licensing worries, hopefully well supported by all browsers, OS's, 32 bit, 64 bit and so on :)

    Thanks, all this as long as they use it for ALL of us, not just a bargaining tool...hope they do the "right thing"! :)

    Im hoping more and more companies will make use of html video
    cant wait to get rid of flash player.

    It will probably still have its uses, but at least for videos now there's another way, hopefully widely used in the future.
    The disadvantage is you won't be able to boil eggs on your laptop while on youtube. Huge time saver.

    less browser crashes and one less security hole is the main advantages of getting rid of flash imo.
