Online communication programs and tools

    since my last reinstall i havent used an instant messenger. i need to get one, but ive only used MSN messenger and yahoo(which my friends have) ive been looking at ICQ lite, ICQ pager, Trillian, yahoo, BitWise Chat, Miranda IM, Odigo, iGo Incognito, MaxxIM, MaxxChat, Devil - Instant Messenger, Easy Message Express, Filetopia, Gaim and afew more. i have very limited knowledge on this subject as im a newbie, ive been learning about some more advanced things, but left out some of the basics, so could you answer a few questions and tell me abit about the things i need to know?
    • do i need a worm cleaner/blocker?
    • do i need bitdefender for MSN yahoo etc.
    • can you suggest which program to get?
    • which addons/plugins should i have
    • is there anything else security wise i should know?
    • if i get one like trillian will yahoo, MSN etc. come with it? or do i need to download them separately
