Would Scotty be overkill running with OA FW free and Avast! free?

In my opinion, no its not an overkill. Its good to have scotty to monitor startup items, services and others.

yeah it would be. OA hips is going to alert you most of the system changes being performed. Other than that taking a quick look under startup items in CCleaner once in a while for something that may have slipped by.

Agree. I haven't run Scotty in real-time in a few years. OA will monitor anything you haven't specifically excluded and will alert to autorun requests when a program is first installed or run.
(I do make a habit of checking the autorun tab in OA for programs and processes on a fairly regular basis, however, and KJ's recommendation to double check with CCleaner (or a great program like Autoruns from SysInternals) makes sense.)

I also think it's a good thing to have less overlap, generally speaking.

I agree, less overlap is better I think (for performance)
What about overlap regarding Avast free and OA free? Any overlap there?

    Not with default settings.
Even with modified (DeepScreen,Hardened mode) I think it is ok.

I would defer to siketa (and others) on this topic, not only because they are much more knowledgeable generally but because I have no recent experience with Avast.

My experience with Winpatrol is it has no noticeable impact on performance. I wouldn't rely on it for security purposes either, but the advantage of running it "real time" was I checked things like auto-starting items and BHOs more often. Of course it's also necessary if you use the Winpatrol "delayed startup" feature.
