I have just checked a file with 3 online antivirus programs and it is clean.
There are a few services where a file can be checked with a large number of programs but I can not find any web addresses - can anyone help ?
    thanks

    Fantastic

Thanks - Antivir is the only one out of all the programs to show a problem on a file that has been on the laptop for years - so looks like a FP.

will I never find a real live virus ? :'(

In addition to the above recommended site, www.Jotti.org
is another excellent source; quote below from that site:
Since it was ID'd by AntiVir, you will get the best result from submitting the file or URL to the www.AVIRA Lab and you will receive an Email opinion, usually within 'working' hours and if it is a False Positive, it will be fixed and save others from concern... Always possible that AntiVir could be the first to ID a brand new malware the others don't see yet..

Send that file to Avira here: http://analysis.avira.com/samples/index.php selecting False positive suspicion. You'll get an answer in maximum 48 hours. In this way they could remove its detection if it turns to be a FP. Good luck! :thumb:

Have checked with virustotal and viruscan and the only one to say virus is avira. The file has been on my wife's laptop for a couple of years. anyway I sent it to
avira and am waiting for them to confirm FP

Just had a reply back from Avira Virus lab Response Team confirming false positive and that it will be removed from one of the next updates. Thanks for all the help
