Instagram. WhatsApp. And now Oculus. Top executives at companies Facebook has acquired keep heading for the exits.

Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe, who co-founded the virtual reality startup Facebook bought for more than $2 billion in 2014, on Monday became the latest high-profile leader to depart the world's largest social network. That list reads like a who's who of the tech industry's top talent who don't seem to want to stay on Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's team.

The departures could have long-term implications for Facebook. By putting all of the acquired companies under tighter control by Zuckerberg, the company may be telling other startup founders that selling off to Facebook shows "that while the arrangement for independence is appealing, it's temporary," Bloomberg News wrote Monday about the latest exit.

On Monday, a Facebook spokesperson downplayed the departure of Iribe, saying in a statement that "there are no changes to the future of Oculus."

Facebook spent billions on Oculus in 2014, and in the years since the organization has been absorbed deeper into Facebook while the startup’s co-founders have stepped back in prominence. Today, the final Oculus co-founder remaining at Facebook, Nate Mitchell, announced in an internal memo sent to employees that he was leaving the company.

The news was first reported by Alex Heath at The Information. Mitchell confirmed the news soon after on Twitter.
In a note on Reddit, Mitchell said he was leaving the company and would be “taking time to travel, be with family, and recharge.”

Mitchell’s role has shifted several times in the past few years at the company as the VR organization underwent a number of leadership shakeups. Late last year, the company’s former CEO Brendan Iribe left the company following disagreements with the team on the future of Oculus’s high-end products.

Oculus has apparently lost its second major player in the course of just a week. Max Cohen, an early staffer and most recently the head of the Facebook-owned company's AR/VR media product unit, has left the company, Variety reported Tuesday.
Cohen started at the virtual reality startup in 2014, two years after its founding and the same year Facebook purchased Oculus for $3 billion.

Cohen's departure comes a week after Oculus co-founder Nate Mitchell announced he was stepping down. Mitchell was the last Oculus co-founder still at Facebook.
The Oculus team at Facebook has also grappled with a number of woes, including a lawsuit and executive turnover, as it tries to make VR more mainstream.

One of the driving forces behind Facebook’s virtual reality efforts is leaving his post: Oculus CTO John Carmack announced Wednesday afternoon that he was transitioning to a “consulting CTO” role this week, and devote most of his time to new challenges outside of the company.

“I will still have a voice in the development work, but it will only be consuming a modest slice of my time,” Carmack wrote in a Facebook post.
Facebook’s VR unit acknowledged the move in a tweet, saying that the company was glad Carmack was “still on board.”

Carmack had joined Oculus in 2013 as its CTO, and stayed on after Facebook acquired the VR startup for $2 billion the following year. He’s had an outsized influence on the VR space, driving both practical implementations for devices like Samsung’s Gear VR and the Oculus Quest as well as next-generation advancements.
Carmack’s announcement comes three months after Oculus co-founder Nate Mitchell revealed that he was leaving Facebook, and it marks just the latest high-profile executive change for the company’s VR unit.
