Consoles and gaming PCs aren't going anywhere for the foreseeable future -- but as compression algorithms and internet connections improve, game streaming is almost ready for prime time.

And now NVIDIA has announced it will bring the GeForce NOW streaming platform to Android. GeForce NOW, which is still in beta, enables users without gaming rigs to essentially rent high-powered NVIDIA servers, install PC games from various digital distributors and stream them to their devices.
Thus far, gamers have streamed 30 million hours of gameplay across 1,000+ games to PCs, Macs and NVIDIA's own SHIELD platform.

NVIDIA has also announced that it will begin rolling out its RTX servers today in Northern California and Germany, with more locations to come. Each RTX blade server packs 40 GPUs, processing games for multiple GeForce NOW users simultaneously.

Nvidia’s GeForce Now game streaming service has made the jump from PC to Android and is downloadable now.

While it could be considered a competitor to the upcoming Google Stadia, Nvidia GeForce Now relies heavily on your gaming PC or laptop to stream your local library to your device via an internet connection. As part of your subscription, you can also stream titles from the cloud — with tons of PC titles included.
When streaming from the cloud, Nvidia’s RTX card-powered online servers take care of the grunt work. That means your smartphone can mimic the performance of a high-end gaming rig without the required hardware. Performance is based on data connection speed.

You should be able to download the GeForce Now app on your Android devices (running Android 5.0+) from the Google Play Store over the coming days. It only appears to be working for Korean users right now. You can, however, grab the app from APK Mirror and sideload to enjoy your PC games on the move.

XDA Developers: Download NVIDIA GeForce Now APK for all Android devices

The Android client is pretty easy to use. If you have access to the beta, all you need to do is sign into your Nvidia account. After that, it will load all the games either in your library or on the supported platforms. For me, it didn’t show every game in my Steam library because not every Steam game is fully supported.

I tried playing for a bit on my Galaxy Note 10+ and Galaxy Fold and both play very well. There was some minor packet loss, but it was pretty infrequent and didnt last for more than 5 seconds. It also works over LTE, but I did not have an opportunity to test the experience over LTE. Below is a screen recording of DOOM from my Galaxy Fold using GeForce Now.

Nvidia and Activision Blizzard seem like close partners. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is one of the biggest games to take advantage of the real-time ray tracing capabilities in modern GeForce graphics cards, and games like Overwatch have graced Nvidia’s GeForce Now for most of the gaming-from-the-cloud service’s multi-year beta.

But a mere week after GeForce Now fully launched and obliterated Google Stadia’s value proposition, Activision Blizzard’s games are being yanked from the service at the publisher’s request, effective immediately.

Nvidia announced its removal with the following statement:

“[...] Per their request, please be advised Activision Blizzard games will be removed from the service. While unfortunate, we hope to work together with Activision Blizzard to reenable these games and more in the future.
In addition to the hundreds of games currently supported, we have over 1,500 games that developers have asked to be on-boarded to the service. Look for weekly updates as to new games we are adding.”
Still, Activision Blizzard’s withdrawal is a major, major bummer.

The Verge: Nvidia’s GeForce Now is losing all Activision Blizzard games, a bad sign for cloud gaming

It’s true that Blizzard, at least, has an EULA that specifically prevents users from playing a game on cloud gaming services, but that doesn’t seem to explain this move. Activision’s EULA doesn’t contain anything of the sort, and again, Activision Blizzard didn’t seem to have any problem with it during the GeForce Now beta.

Regardless of the reasons, it’s worrying for those of us who are excited by cloud gaming’s potential to see a service like this hobbled because one party, or the other, didn’t want to work out a deal. It makes me wonder if we should expect nasty carriage negotiations to play out regularly in gaming like they already do in the pay TV world, holding our favorite programs hostage until one party or the other provides a slightly bigger piece of the action.

Earlier this week, NVIDIA revealed that the GeForce Now cloud gaming service had taken a significant hit only a week on from launch. Per Activision Blizzard’s request, NVIDIA removed all Battle.net games from the service.
A ‘Misunderstanding’
In a statement sharing the news, NVIDIA stopped short of providing a reason for the request. The subtext was that Activision Blizzard was responsible.

It has now emerged that NVIDIA had its wires crossed in what the company describes as a ‘misunderstanding.’ NVIDIA assumed that through Activision Blizzard’s participation in the GeForce Now beta, support for the publisher’s games would carry over to the full launch of the service and, more specifically, the free three-month trial for early adopters.
On Activision Blizzard’s side, this wasn’t the case. The company opted to remove their games in anticipation of a commercial agreement with NVIDIA.

The games apparently weren’t supposed to be on the service to begin with — but their disappearance is something that those who resist digital gaming subscriptions are afraid of happening.

The corporate quandary notwithstanding, this vanishing realizes one of the fears of those resisting the adoption of cloud gaming, and other forms of digital-first gaming. When you buy a subscription to a game service, you’re essentially purchasing the right to temporarily play a game.
You don’t own the games in question, and if the publishers ever remove them for whatever reason, you’re out of luck.

It’s been a common worry ever since the rise of digitally downloading games and has only become more common since the advent of Stadia and GeForce Now.
It doesn’t sound like something worth worrying about, except this “misunderstanding” essentially provides a case study for that fear.

Nvidia’s GeForce Now cloud gaming service has had a somewhat rocky launch since it exited beta earlier this month, and it’s getting even rockier. The company says it’s now losing games from major publisher Bethesda Softworks, which owns Bethesda Game Studios series like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls as well as id Software franchises like Doom. According to Nvidia, one title that will stick around is Wolfenstein: Youngblood, for reasons the company is not disclosing.

After GeForce Now entered what Nvidia is calling its public trial, there was also reportedly a disagreement between the two companies over the platform’s model, which allows subscribers to buy games on other platforms, like Steam, and use them on GeForce Now.

Nvidia addressed some of these issues in a blog post published yesterday. “This trial is an important transitional period where gamers, developers and publishers can try the premium experience with minimal commitment while we continue to refine our offering,” the company wrote.
It’s not all doom and gloom for GeForce Now.

Forward-looking: Nvidia’s cloud-based gaming service GeForce Now launched less than three weeks ago but has already accumulated one million users. While many of them are surely just nosing around the free tier, that’s a number that’s sure to impress – unless you’re Bethesda, of course.

Nvidia might be losing games left and right and center, but they can also afford to. GeForce Now already has 1,500 games, while Stadia has only a few dozen. Nvidia’s business model is also a lot more attractive: unlike Stadia, which requires you to pay the full purchase price of any game you want to use on the service, GeForce Now gives you access to all your game libraries as part of the deal.
If you’ve invested hundreds or even thousands like many of you no doubt have, then GeForce Now will save you a lot of money.

However, that could also be why Bethesda isn’t so keen on the service. The whole Fallout 76 debacle proves that Bethesda is a little, uh, greedy, shall we say. For a title like Doom, which most gamers already own, GeForce Now doesn’t earn them much revenue. Stadia would.

After years of testing, polishing, and refining, the GeForce Now service saw its official launch on February 4, so we thought we'd go hands-on with GeForce Now to see how it works on Apple's Macs.

The $4.99 per month cost (or the free service) does NOT include access to games. You still need to purchase games from supported game stores like Steam to be able to play them using GeForce Now, though there are some free ad-supported titles.
Even though GeForce Now has been in beta for three years, the game library is still a little bit lackluster.

Playing Destiny 2 over GeForce Now with an ‌iMac Pro‌ on the wired connection resulted in no lag, a much higher resolution and frame rate, and no dropped frames. It was a smooth experience that was much like playing the game on a high-end gaming PC.

Some Developers Don't Know Their Games Are Streaming on GeForce Now
'The Long Dark' is the latest high-profile game to be removed from Nvidia's service

The Long Dark game director Raphael van Lierop said on Twitter that Nvidia didn’t ask permission for The Long Dark to appear, and said “devs should control where their games exist.” van Lierop did not rule out having the game come back.

Nvidia reportedly offered the studio behind The Long Dark, Hinterland, a free graphics card as an apology. Hinterland did not respond to an immediate request for comment about this.
The Long Dark is not the only game to find itself in this situation, reporting by VICE Games has uncovered. A number of developers have not been contacted by Nvidia before seeing their games appear on GeForce Now.
“You bought it, you own it” [...] Play all of the games that I already own?! In practice, it’s proven more complicated because of Nvidia’s approach.

When asked to elaborate on the high-profile departures from GeForce Now, Nvidia declined to comment, and instead pointed me towards the blogs and forum posts it had already published.
Currently, the only way to know what games GeForce Now supports is a cumbersome search bar on Nvidia’s website.

For Nvidia’s GeForce Now, the hits keep on coming. Or rather, going.

2K Games’ library is the latest tranche of AAA games to leave the fledgling stream-anywhere service. Nvidia announced 2K’s departure, effective immediately, earlier on Friday afternoon.

“We are working with 2K Games to re-enable their games in the future,” the company said.

NVIDIA has published a lengthy blog post giving users an update on what to expect over the coming months. For starters, three more publishers are pulling out of the service on April 24: Xbox Game Studios, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Klei Entertainment.

These three join the ranks of multiple publishers who have pulled out over the last few months, such as Activision, 2K Games and Bethesda Softworks. It's not all removals though, with NVIDIA noting that others such as Ubisoft, Bandai Namco, Bungie and Epic Games are fully committed to the service.
Chris Early, senior vice president of partnerships at Ubisoft, said that "Ubisoft fully supports NVIDIA's GeForce NOW with complete access to our PC games from the Ubisoft Store or any supported game stores," [...]

NVIDIA also stated it is working to bring over 1,500 more games to GeForce Now and is also working with publishers to tag games on digital storefronts, so that the moment a game as published, it can be ready for use with GeForce Now.

After officially launching earlier this year on Android devices and desktop, the Nvidia GeForce Now appears to be available and fully playable on Chromebooks.

Nvidia had previously confirmed that it was bringing a web client for GeForce Now that’s specifically designed using WebRTC to allow Chromebooks to game without a dedicated app. While the firm didn’t explicitly confirm when the service would be coming to more hardware, one eagle-eyed fan over on Reddit has confirmed that it is now playable on their Chrome OS-powered laptop.
We’ve not be able to confirm if this is widely rolling out though, as I’m unable to get GeForce Now on my modest HP Chromebook 14. Some other commenters are also not seeing the option on their devices, either.

When NVIDIA launched GeForce Now earlier this year, the streaming service ran into trouble with publishers like Activision Blizzard and Bethesda. A "misunderstanding" over what titles could stay on the platform after its beta led to some games leaving the service abruptly. Thanks to a policy change, those days are likely behind GeForce Now.

Moving forward, NVIDIA says users will only be able to play games on GeForce Now from publishers who have opted into the service. The policy doesn't change the fact you'll still need to own any games you want to stream through GeForce Now, but it does mean that any existing titles will be less likely to leave the service from this point forward.
That said, a batch of games is leaving GeForce Now.

NVIDIA started closed beta testing for the Android mobile app last year, and in February of this year, the service became available to all users. On Android TV, however, the service is limited to NVIDIA’s own SHIELD TV devices. That looks to be changing soon.

The latest version of the NVIDIA GeForce NOW app adds “beta support for Android TV devices.” The changelog talks about how NVIDIA recommends the SHIELD TV for the lowest latency and highest quality and that other Android TV experiences may vary. The Play Store listing specifically says the LG U+ UHD3 set-top box from South Korea has been “optimized for GeForce NOW.” This is the first non-NVIDIA Android TV box to get official support.

What this means is that NVIDIA is preparing to bring GeForce NOW to more Android TV devices.
NVIDIA says development is still ongoing for GeForce NOW support on Android TV at large. The company has plans to give an official release sometime later on, but it will likely be in “Early Access.” NVIDIA also says “select” Android TV devices will get support, so it won’t be available officially to all.

Freestyle lets you apply post-processing filters to your games in real-time, allowing you to adjust saturation, add film grain effects, and much more -- provided the title you're playing supports the technology.

Freestyle probably isn't the most used feature in GeForce Experience's arsenal, but it's still reasonably entertaining to fiddle around with. Of course, it has practical applications, as well: you might consider activating Freestyle's blue light reduction or sharpening filters, for example (the latter worked quite well in our own testing).

NVIDIA had pledged to announce new games for GeForce NOW every week, and over the past months, it has kept to that promise. NVIDIA is also making it easier to sync your Steam library to the service.

Further, NVIDIA is also adding in the ability to let users sync their Steam libraries to GeForce NOW by navigating to Settings > Game Sync. One of the main draws on a Chromebook is the fact that most activities rely on an active internet connection, letting users do more through the cloud rather than their own hardware. Cloud gaming just makes sense on a Chromebook, though services have been surprisingly slow in bringing over adoption.
NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW game streaming left beta in February 2020, with a promise to come to Chromebooks “later this year”.

The combination of Chromebooks and cloud gaming is perfect. Chromebooks by very nature are cloud-centric devices, and usually come with low-powered hardware. This hardware humility helps keep the cost down and does not impede productivity by a large margin as most tasks are offloaded to the cloud.

Nvidia game streaming service GeForce Now coming to iOS Safari

GeForce Now could be coming to iOS via browser support which will enable games like the stricken "Fortnite" to return to the iPhone.

According to the BBC, the streaming service GeForce Now has developed a version that runs on mobile Safari. If true, users could access the service and play the entire catalog of games without downloading an app or accessing the App Store.
In-browser gaming does work on iOS, as Facebook Games has shown.

Facebook Games currently uses touch for mobile Safari with no apparent controller support. So playing games on GeForce Now will likely do the same with a virtual control pad on-display or other workaround.

Most big names have pitched in their own game streaming service, and while the ecosystem slowly matures, there’s still one problem towards this omnipresence: the Apple App Store.

Apple did suggest in its own statement that game streaming services could use the Safari browser or other browsers to reach all iPhone ad iPad users.
NVIDIA appears to have done just that. GeForce NOW is streaming on iOS Safari in beta from today onwards.

This opens the door for existing members subscribed to this game streaming service to play their favorite games on iPhones and iPad as well, in addition to all the other hardware options such as Windows, macOS, Android, and Chromebooks.

One of the top cloud gaming services is NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW, which launched its first browser-based client back in April of last year for Chromebooks.

In November, NVIDIA made GeForce NOW available for iOS/iPadOS devices through Safari, bypassing Apple’s App Store. At the time, the company said it planned to officially expand support for its browser client to more Chrome platforms, including Linux, PC, Mac, and Android. Now, version 2.0.27 of the service is rolling out with beta support for the Chrome browser on Windows and macOS.

In the release notes for the update, NVIDIA says that users of Google Chrome on Windows and macOS can start streaming games by visiting https://play.geforcenow.com/. NVIDIA states that other platforms able to use the Google Chrome browser may work by visiting the site, but the company does not guarantee support. The company used the WebRTC framework to optimize the browser experience to feel as close as possible to the native app.

GeForce Now surpasses 12 million users, expanding support for more EA games and Origin

As it continues to expand PC game support for its streaming service, Nvidia has today announced that EA games are coming to GeForce Now and its growing player base.

One of the only EA-backed games currently on GeForce Now is Apex Legends, which has been supported for several months now. Today, Nvidia and EA have confirmed that four more games are launching on GeForce Now.
Beyond those four games, GeForce Now is working to add support for the Origin game launcher that EA uses for many of its PC ports. Some of the games will have Origin support “as early as” today.

Nvidia has also confirmed updated numbers for GeForce Now, which as of this week is used by over 12 million players. Nvidia says that these players stream over 20 million hours of gameplay each month across 70 countries, and that nearly 80% of devices being used to play games on the service would not be able to play these games otherwise.

NVIDIA’s GeForce Now service is adding a new subscription tier called RTX 3080 for gamers that want higher visual fidelity.
As the name implies, this new plan gives you the benefit of streaming games from a gaming rig that’s powered by the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 GPU. Up until now, NVIDIA GeForce Now has been available in Free and Priority tiers. The big distinctions were support for RTX graphics (powered by the RTX 2080), extended session length up to 6 hours), and priority access to NVIDIA’s servers.

With the GeForce Now RTX 3080 plan, you’ll get exclusive access to a gaming PC with a GeForce RTX 3080 GPU, support for streaming at up to 1440p resolution and 120 frames per second (on PC and Mac), and support for 4K HDR streaming on the NVIDIA Shield TV. Select Android phones will also support 120FPS streaming, including the Samsung Galaxy S21. NVIDIA also says it’s using its Adaptive Sync technology to reduce latency even further, and those playing at 120FPS will notice it the most, with latency as low as 60ms. The allowed session length is also longer, up to 8 hours.

For the Priority tier, the conditions remain the same. You’ll be able to play games with RTX graphics (on an RTX 2080), get priority access to servers, play at up to 1080p and 60FPS, and your sessions can last up to 6 hours. For free users, nothing changes.

As for pricing, the new GeForce Now RTX 3080 tier will cost $99.99 for six months, and that’s the only subscription option available. Current Priority members and Founders – those who signed up before March 18th – have priority access to this new tier, and preorders will open to everyone in late October.

Although Xbox owners are waiting for Microsoft to switch on its own cloud gaming service on consoles, they have other ways to stream games. An update in September brought the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser to Xbox One and Series X/S consoles, allowing players to access Google Stadia. Starting today, they can fire up PC games via NVIDIA's GeForce Now as well.

GeForce Now is now available in beta on Edge, as The Verge notes, creating a pathway for Xbox users to play hundreds of games they might otherwise miss out on. GeForce Now is free for one-hour sessions though the resolution is limited to 1080p. NVIDIA just unveiled a new, more expensive plan that promises "desktop-class latency" and gameplay streaming in 1440p at up to 120 fps on PC and Mac and in 4K HDR at 60 fps on NVIDIA Shield TV.

Even so, thanks to GeForce Now, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S players now have a gateway to some major PC exclusives, such as League of Legends and Dota 2, without the need for a gaming rig.
