Seems like it's mostly exploits that can be used to bypass hardware based firewalls.

"NSA website recovers from outage amid intrigue"

"The National Security Agency’s website was offline for almost a full day until Tuesday evening, in an unexplained outage that began shortly after hackers claimed to have stolen a collection of the agency's prized cyber weapons.

It's unknown if the two events are connected...."

A Good Read with further info. The Washington Post is well connected and some of it's intelligence and national security stories have been ground-breaking and top-notch.

"Powerful NSA hacking tools have been revealed online"

"Some of the most powerful espionage tools created by the National Security Agency’s elite group of hackers have been revealed in recent days, a development that could pose severe consequences for the spy agency’s operations and the security of government and corporate computers..."

"NSA’s use of software flaws to hack foreign targets posed risks to cybersecurity"

"...For years, security experts have pressed the agency to disclose these bugs so they can be fixed, but the agency hackers have often been reluctant.

Now with the mysterious release of a cache of NSA hacking tools over the weekend, the agency has lost an offensive advantage, experts say, and potentially placed at risk the security of countless large companies and government agencies worldwide.

Several of the tools exploited flaws in commercial firewalls that remain unpatched, and they are out on the Internet for all to see...

The firewalls sold by Cisco, Juniper and Fortinet are highly popular and work on large-scale enterprise systems....

...Already, the firms are racing to reverse-engineer the code, identify any flaws and devise patches..."

Isn't the NSA supposed to get involved with the investigation into the alleged Russian hacking interference with the US presidential campaign? This is all getting very disheveled and...I dunno...weird.

The little snippet from the article "a patriot who took NSA materials home so that he could become better at his job" was just stunning. If this fool had security clearance before 2015 the badguys already know more about him than he knows himself due to the previous OPM breach. And as this data is a makes blackmail and/or bribes really easy, any data theft must be viewed as significant and harmful.

    But things will be changing.

Yes, there should probably be stricter rules applied and control imposed over data access for contractors and employees also.
