Couldn't have said it any better! I'm getting tired of this ''AI browsers are the future'' crap.

It sounds like AI might made people dumber and lazier. Long live Vivaldi! :thumb:

Nice. Well done. A nugget of sanity in a sewer of hype.

It has a long way to catch up with Google having already done that.

I don't use Vivaldi but I like Jon von Tetzchner's perspective.

I don't think you can compare a search engine with AI tools though. For example, Google will simply show me a list of travel agencies, while AI will book a trip for me. No thank you, I will do it myself.

It's basically a browser for power users, with features like tab stacking and workspaces, handy if you use a lot of tabs. It also has a pretty good bookmarks manager. In my view, it's way better than Brave, Opera, Edge and Crappy Chrome. And Firefox is a complete joke to me, don't even get me started.

    rants wont help out.
i set up vivaldi as portable for my own view to the things.

wow - the latest version, is pretty ugly with its new icons. i haven't used it that much, but this?
nice colors for section in settings, but sidebar? and ideas?
and it threw a warning when starting, i would lose passwords or more. i never see this before, when installing as "standalone". (=portable) curiosity.

at least any chromium based are very similar except its personal touch.

I made the jump to Vivaldi in 2021 when Internet Explorer made it known that it was shutting up shop. It tried a little to hard at the beginning, wanting to be everything for everyone but has matured over the years. There are still a few problems that have never been fixed (right click context menu problem) and are now only spoken of in dark alleys. Nevertheless, I'm happy with Vivaldi and don't foresee a change.

    Fellow Vivaldi user here.

What problem do you have with the right click context menu?

Biggest mistake ever. If i run Microsoft it would have been to vastly improve the old IE and bring it around to a much better position.

That crappy Edge is entirely detestable and talk about ugly, that curvy thing they brand it with is repulsive. Almost kiddish, just like the Edge Browser that is nothing but a hog. No wonder a mass exodus away from it has driven users to alternate browsers. To this day the net is chalked full of methods to rip that junk out of a Windows Installation.

Vilvadi was okay last time i tried it. I also miss the old Opera, a fast and sleek alternative until Chrome ruled the roost.

Opera 6 was the best! Though I enjoyed K-meleon later, until it stagnated.

I've been trying Vivaldi on my Android phone lately and like it. It's fast and snappy, and working fine so far. I've been looking for a replacement for SeaMonkey as that's failing to work more and more as sites move to only supporting Chrome.

The comparison was with Google making people dumber and lazier, which Google has certainly done. People today think they are smarter than ever. Until you disconnect them form the internet. 50 years ago people had to learn stuff from books and actual experiences. And remember it. Today you don't have to remember anything, you can just Google it. I'll admit that I benefit from this myself, but it is what it is.

Some brilliant people had poor memories and likely would've made extensive use of Google tools. It's always a trade off: brain capacity can be used to store facts and details, or used to apply things you can look up when needed. One likely can't excel at both. But Google is just a tool like anything else, can be used effectively, or used lazily. And whether using Google search or AI, one still has to be able to look at the results with a critical eye and question dubious answers; I think that's where the vast public fails, and AI is making it worse by sounding smart.

    But, we're getting off topic...

i dont why IE was mentioned. its engine was so much outdated and had serious issues with modern pages. same for opera with presto. "fast" is not the only quality term for a browser engine.

and if edge may be a hog, then chrome, vivaldi, brave and similar chromium based has to be too. its pretty much the same code behind, only the ui is slightly different.

vivaldis "application" folder counts 890meg, while edge its folder has only 780meg.
seamonkey is so much behind firefox. its base is somewhere around 50, and contains lots of patches and conversions from firefox 60/68/78/91 - all esr versions. tricking here and there. there was the idea to lift sm on the next level, a combo of current firefox esr and thunderbird esr, but it seemed to be dropped. a lot of users will leave sm then, not only because of legacy extensions and other possible tweaks, also because it wont support windows xp or 7 - where a lot users got stuck in time. i could not imagine this before.

i am this generation. learning by doing, not reading. my younger colleagues with some advanced education share these thoughts, but the very young dont have a relation to this behavior.

there exists a german saying: "wer schreibt, der bleibt" - there exist no really translation for it
means - words you write down, you wont forget that fast.

google is the mercedes of all search engines, the best. but its also a synonym for a search engine - dont know, "ask google" or "google it". LMGTFY - let me google that for you -> https://lmgtfy2.com/

its marketing has worked well. chrome was a long time behind firefox, and google spent a lot of money to invent chrome to its current features. mozilla dont have that money, no search engine, no this, no that. google is almighty in many places, because of the money.

for my needs i use firefox, i also had seamonkey decades ago. i use also edge for my needs, most times on work, although i might user firefox. edge is administrated, but i can install adblocker or more, which is done -> adguard. i also might can use chrome (which is not installed on my tablet for work), but i wont, because of edge.

for me there exist no "not my browser". each browser has its purpose, its audience. dont like it? use another one, the sky is the limit.

to note: chromium is google. if chromium gets splitted from google, this browser engine has no future. if google drops chromium, then any other chromium based is dead too. in both cases none of them had the money and the power to develope chromium furthermore.

I second that remembering things isn't a great tool: civilization had moments of great progress when there were technological methods to store, and ideally replicate, relevant information. Papyrus in ancient times, printing press invented by Johannes Gutenberg in Renaissance come to mind as examples.

OK I see what you mean. I always looked at the Internet as being the biggest encyclopedia, so no problem with Google at all, you can learn so much about all kinds of stuff. But it's true that actually remembering stuff is still important. But AI will make things way worse.
