Powerful Spiritual Leader Dies After Long Struggle

VATICAN CITY (April 2) - Pope John Paul II, the Polish pontiff who led the Roman Catholic Church for more than a quarter century and became history's most-traveled pope, died Saturday in his Vatican apartment. He was 84.

"The Holy Father died this evening at 9:37 p.m. in his private apartment. All the procedures outlined in the apostolic Constitution 'Universi Dominici Gregis' that was written by John Paul II on Feb. 22, 1996, have been put in motion," the Holy See said in a statement.

The announcement came from papal spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls and was distributed to journalists via e-mail. John Paul expired as cardinals were leading some 70,000 people in prayers for him in his "last journey."

The pope died after suffering heart and kidney failure following two hospitalizations in as many months. Just a few hours earlier, the Vatican had said he was in "very serious" condition but responded to members of the papal household.

Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the Vatican No. 2 official, immediately led a tearful crowd of 70,000 people in St. Peter's Square in prayers for the dead pope.

My condoleances to all Catholics - although personally I'm not of of them. No offence intended - but as goes for kings: 'the king is dead, long live the (new) king': hope you all get comfort when white smoke comes out of that chimney: papa est!.

Thousands were certainly effected by his life in a positive way and he had a full life. I would like to express my sorry for those who are or will have much emotional pain over this.

:'( The world has indeed lost a great spiritual leader an man. I along with no doubt countless others feel a sadness that is hard to express, an while I also am not catholic, I send my condolence to those who are, as well as to those who are personally effected by his passing.

    Thanks

The world has lost a great spiritual and moral leader.

Pope John Paul II will be remembered as a giant of the 20th century.

He will be a very hard act to follow.

May he be at peace with the Lord.

A great celebration of life, He was one in a million.

May His next journey in life be as great as His last journey :) I believe we never really die, just move to another place ;)
