I recently upgraded to version 4, and since then downloading files makes my browser freeze.

I have confirmed NOD being the culprit because I turned off NOD and downloads would run as usual. Even if I try Firefox in safe mode while NOD is actively running protection, the freezes still occur so it's nothing to do with my browser or extensions (it happens in Opera, IE and Safari as well).

The freezes happen either just as the "save file" dialogue box comes up, or as I hit "save file" or just after the file finishes download.

    It's very annoying. :(

    Windows XP SP3 running:

    Virus signature database: 4003 (20090412)
    Update module: 1028 (20090302)
Antivirus and antispyware scanner module: 1206 (20090409)
    Advanced heuristics module: 1092 (20090309)
    Archive support module: 1092 (20090324)
    Cleaner module: 1040 (20090401)
    Anti-Stealth support module: 1010 (20090302)
    SysInspector module: 1211 (20090325)
    Self-defense support module : 1005 (20081105)

I never had these problems with v3.

Try uninstalling v4 and installing v3 to confirm or deny that the problem occurs with v4 only.

I did this and in v3 I have zero problems. Reinstalled v4 and the problem returns.

Just to make sure, did you have v3 fully updated? If so, does disabling real-time or web access scanner make a difference?

Yep, fully updated. I unistalled 4, rebooted, installed 3, rebooted just in case, and then ran the update until it told me there were no more updates.

And turning off real-time/antivirus and antispyware protection makes downloads work without a problem, as I (somewhat) stated in the OP.

Could you give me a link to a file that I could use to replicate the problem here?

Well the problem is this: it happens everywhere. :)

No matter what I download, and what site it's coming from, it always makes my browser hang for a couple of seconds.

Have you made any alterations to the default install settings, in particular the Web access protection section ?

Please provide me with an example. It's normal to see a little delay when a file (especially a larger installer) gets downloaded as it is subsequently decompressed and each file is scanned. Still, I'd bet it must be happening with v3, too, hence I'd need to test it with the same file you did.

    Hello.
I am having exactly the same issue with my ESET Smart Security v4 .
When I am downloading a file (e.g. portable apps Suite Standard) , it takes ages to finish the download after it has been downloaded. It takes about 2-10min. and the browser is freezing after download a file and the ESET process (ESET Service “ekrn.exe”) is busy with about 50% CPU usage during that time.

Well what I now have done is, that I made some changes in the Web access protection section - Limits changes:
    - Maximum scan time for object (sec.): set to 2
    - Archive nesting level: set to 2
After that changes I have no problem with downloading files, but I am not sure if that setting is secure!?
    .
    Greetings from Germany,
    Sven
