No desktop icons just the links beneath them.

What does a person do in a situation like this to get the icons back?
The words are still there, for instance, I'll use an example with something like IE.
The Blue E is missing but the word Internet Explorer is there.

TweakUI has an option "Repair" for repairing icons, but it will also change the custom sequence of icons.
So you have to re-arrange your icons in YOUR sequence.

Sure they are....especially if some malware has highjacked them

If by chance it turns out to be a simple software issue....we'll take the appropriate action at that point in time

 

Actually I'm posting this for a friend.
He's been having this problem for about a week.
I'll post back later with his response once he downloads the program.
I gave him some basic antispyware programs to run first along with an antivirus program.
He uses McAfee but said it has been giving him problems lately.
