    HI,
PLEASE help me! I have used the spybot s&d program, the problem is that every time i start IE it comes up with my "my search" searching for "nkvd.us" and if i try to change this it just sets back to it again. The main problem though is i cannot access any websites because it always puts nkvd.us before what i typed ("nkvd.us/www....") and redirects me back to the "my search" and searches for nkvd.us again.
I do not know anything about viruses and that sort of thing but it just seems stupid that the virus would tell me what it was called and even search for itself!
Anyway it seems like this problem is common so could anyone maybe explain to me more about what this is and why i have got it etc, but mainly HOW DO I GET RID OF NKVD.USo_O
I have done the spybot and hijackthis, here is a copy of hijack this, PLEASE HELP!!

Boot to safe mode and run cwshredder again. Follow that with ad-aware in safe mode.

Thankyou SO much yellowhammer, everything appears to be back to normal!

I have got a few more questions that i would appreciate u answering though if this is possible (you may not be able to answer them all!)

    1) what did i do to get rid of this thing...
    2) what is this thing (nkvd.us) eg trojan, spyware, worm...
    3) what are the different types of things! (trojan, spyware, worm etc)

But these are the main questions:

    4) I have written down the websites i visisted before i got the nkvd.us, but none of these websites had www. before them, does this mean they are illegal!?
    5) If i go back onto these websites is there a way that i can protect or stop my computer getting nkvd.us again?
    6) what should i do if i get nkvd.us again? (run hijack this and post it here again or is there a quicker and easier way to remove it?)
    7) I am going to contact symantec tomorrow would you recommend mentioning nkvd.us to them (note: these websites that i caught it off may be illegal so i could get into trouble!)
 I have got a thing on my desktop called "thumbs" can i delete this?

And finally just some general questions ( i may have to set another thread for these!)

    9) When you send items to the recycle bin and delete them are they permanently removed?...
    10) If they are not permamently removed is there a way i can access these files to permanently remove them?
    11) Is there any sooftware you would recomend me to download at all? (anything for any reason! as long as it could help protect my computer! Note: i already have norton internet security installed)

    Thank you again

Lots of questions to answer. ;)

You had a coolwebsearch infection. There are hundreds of variations. They hijack your homepage and search pages. CWShredder is the best tool for removing these. Adaware does a good job as well.

None of the sites are illegal as far as I know.

There are ways to keep from getting infected again. I will cover them in a minute.

It won't do any good to contact Symantec on these. They are not capable of preventing this. The coolwebsearch stuff is not considered a virus or trojan.

Items are not permanently gone until the recycle bin is emptied.

    How to protect yourself.

    1. Keep windows updated at the windows update site.
    2. Set up IE Security correctly. http://www.jfitz.com/tips/ie_security_config.html
    3. Keep an up to date antivirus - I prefer NOD32 to any other.
    4. Run a good firewall - I prefer Sygate Personal Free Version
    5. Update and run adaware and Spybot S&D on a weekly basis.
    6. Install SpywareBlaster - The paid version that automatically updates.
    7. Install SpywareGuard.
    8. Install IE-SpyAd

Links to most of these are available on my website here.

    Thankyou!
I have got more questions if u care 2 answer them!

    1) If i go back onto these websites it is DEFINATELY going to try and download the nkvd.us/ coolwebsearch thing again, with the things i have currently got eg. adaware will these be enough to stop my computer getting the same thing again or not (so really would you say that it is safe to enter the website that i caught coolwebsearch off?)

    2) All of the things which you have suggested downloading, won't norton internet security be sufficient? (it has got antivirus and a firewall and anti-intrusion)

    3) How do you know so much about these sort of files and computers!? (this is more a personal question!)

    1. Adaware only removes what is already there. The other methods I described will most likely protect you. I never get infected and I check many of these sites out while helping. There are no guarantees. If you know what sites they are you can avoid them and/or put them in the restricted zone in your IE security settings.
    2. Norton Internet Security might be sufficient as a firewall and antivirus. I don't use any Norton Products and won't. It is not sufficient to totally protect you. The other suggestions I made are also critical I think.
    3. Lot's of research. ;)
