My internet page keeps going to nkvd.us and then best-search info - it will not allow me to change my default or even type another search engine over it. I have run Norton Antivirus, Adware 6.0 and Spybot Search and Destroy with no improvement. I tried to download Hijack This but it kept defaulting back to the best-search page. I have also tried to download cws shredder but the same thing happens. Help - what do I do?

    Hi kew852000,

    Welcome to Wilder's!!!!!

Please download the latest copy of CWShredder as you will need it later.

    Then reboot into safe mode.

Now run CWShredder by double-clicking the icon of the file you just downloaded.
Click FIX and follow the instructions given.

    Reboot.

Now download Ad-Aware and double-click to install.
    Then follow the following steps:

1.) Start Ad-Aware by double-clicking on its desktop icon.
2.) Update Ad-aware by using its Globe icon.
3.) After updating, close all IE windows, then close and restart Ad-aware.
4.) Be sure the following items are checked under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Scanning Engine:
    "Unload recognized processes during scanning".
5.) Be sure the following items are checked under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Cleaning Engine:
"Automatically mark all objects in result list".
"Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion".
"XP/2000: Allow unloading explorer to unload shell extensions prior deletion" <-- Check only if you have Windows XP or 2000.
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot".
    6.) Press "Scan Now".
7.) Check option "Use Custom scanning options".
8.) Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan".
9.) Press "Select drives\folders to scan".
10.) Select the active partition which is usually C:
11.) Press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives...
12.) If it finds "bad" files and registry keys, press "Next" again.
13.) All items should be checked. if not right-click in that pane and choose "select all".
    14.) Press "next".
15.) When it asks to remove all checked items, Press "OK".
16.) You may now exit out of Ad-Aware and reboot your system. Then go to the next section for SpyBot S&D.

Now download Spybot S&D and install by double-clicking on the downloaded file.
    Then follow the following steps:

1.) Run Spybot S&D from desktop icon or Start menu.
2.) Press "Search for updates" button to get list of updates available.
    3.) Press "Download updates" button.
4.) Close all IE windows, then close and restart Spybot S&D.
5.) Press "Check for problems" button.
6.) Have SpyBot remove all it marks in red by pressing "Fix selected problems".
7.) You may now exit out of Ad-Aware and reboot your system. Then go to the next section for CWShredder.

Now reboot your system and post a new HJT log.
If you need instructions for HJT, go here HERE and follow the instructions for step 2.

    Regards,
    Kent

    Dear Kent,

Thanks so much for your quick reply. The problem is I can't even download CWS Shredder because the search page automatically defaults back to Nkvd.us and then best-search info. Is there a way around this?

    Kent--

Thank you VERY much for your help.

    Everything worked fine.

I ran HiJackThis (HJT). The log is pasted below and attached because the line wraps might be too ugly.

Do you (or any person reading this) have any further advice?

    Please advise.

    Thanks again.

make sure you have the latest version of cwshreder

    dv--

    That is great news.

Everything is running just fine from here.

As a side note, the odd part is that that I have always kept my machine patched with the latest Windows Critical Updates and the latest Windows Recommended Updates. Furthermore, I always keep Norton AntiVirus up to date as well. If looks like some variants of ByteVerify, and perhaps others, can still get past such a system? I don't know, obviously.

I will say this-- I am DAMN glad that you, everyone here at the Wilder's, the CWSshredder-folks, and the AdAware-folks, and the Spybot-folks are all fighting the "good fight" and helping out.

I had been quite depressed at the state of affairs with respect to viruses, exploits, spam, and other nasty web-terror. Matters are truly tragic when there are evil people who seem hell-bent on wasting the time of others. Such cyber-terror really undermines the advancement of human knowledge at large.

The situation is really quite serious, much more so than most seem to recognize. Think about it. Cyber-terrorists are to blame for millions of hours of human-productivity. Such time could be better spent elsewhere, such as advancing the fight against cancer, finding a cure for AIDS, analyzing social problems, solving political problems, doing our day-to-day jobs (as if they are not difficult enough already), and generally advancing the welfare of the human race as a whole and building the collective knowledge-base of the world. As such, the mere existence of cyber-terrorism is really a sad commentary on the depths to which the human mind can sink.

(Note-- Some cyber-terrorists are even STUPID enough to cite a "broken window fallacy" to justify their actions, which, of course, is a complete joke.)

    Anyway, that's my rant.

In the end, I am VERY pleased to find that some "good people" have found a way to kick ass.

    IMHO.

    Thanks again.
