Newton Mail quietly resurrects its cross-platform email app
The subscription email client is back on iOS, Android and Mac

The Newton Mail email service bid subscribers farewell in September, but now it seems to be back. 9to5Mac has spotted an updated version on the iOS App Store and Engadget can confirm that it's also available on Google Play for Android and on Mac.

"We are thrilled to be back. If you still have your Newton account, just log in using your Newton username and password," state the developer's notes on the App Store and Google Play.

New perks listed for iOS include the ability to delete a single mail in a thread, support for "mark unread from here," support for task managers such as OmniFocus, Things, 2doapp and Bear, [...] In addition, there are a ton of improvements on Mac Compose. The annual subscription charge of $50, which may have been responsible for its downfall, remains intact.

The new policy, updated on February 4, gives Newton latitude to show targeted ads and build a detailed profile of your online activity. It also has an unusual clause about collecting data from the people you email.

The new policy also makes clear that it will combine personal data from Newton with outside sources, making me wonder if Newton will turn to data brokers to build a more complete profile of its users. One part of this policy seems especially creepy (emphasis mine):

[...] For example, we collect information about you from those who correspond with you via email, or from third-party service providers who share certain profile information about you, or we may collect information about you when you post content to our pages or feeds on third-party social media sites.
Keep in mind that Newton isn’t just an IMAP email app that passes along messages from an email provider [...] Newton creates a copy of the user’s emails and stores them on its own servers, along with contacts and calendar info. In other words, Newton will have access to a trove of personal data that it could potentially mine for targeted ads. (I’ve reached out to Newton and Essential for comment.)

Cross-Platform Newton Mail Service to Continue Life Under New Ownership

Newton Mail is continuing to operate beyond its original closure date after the service was bought by new owners (via The Verge).

Newton was originally set to shut down on April 30, following previous owner Essential's decision to cease all operations earlier this year. Essential originally came in possession of the mail app through its acquisition of the CloudMagic team in 2019.
The new owners are software designers Maitrik Kataria and Justin Mitchell, who concede in a Medium post that they're not a "well-funded VC backed company" but are simply big fans of Newton Mail.

Existing users of Newton Mail shouldn't see any differences in the short term and the service will continue to cost $50 a year to use, but the new owners plan to bring better communication and customer support to users, as well as fix some bugs in the software. After that, they intend to roll out new features including a new dark mode within three to six months.
