Via the PC Tools Forum on Aug 13 by long-time admin AChen:
"We have moved the development of ThreatFire to another development team to better integrate ThreatFire into our core security portfolio. ThreatFire continues to be developed by our team. In fact we will be releasing a Beta sometime next week."

Let me be the first to post up the prerequisite Wilders commentary...
    Is it free?
    Any screenshots?
    Is it still bloated?
    It looks like a rougue.
    It's ugly.

Otherwise, this ought to be interesting!

I'm still using it... :doubt: Hasn't give me any problems... never... I really hope they keep it free. If not, then I'll move to Emsisoft's Mamutu.

If you don't go to other people's funerals, they won't come to yours.

I checked TF's forum. A beta has been promised (by AChen) but -- so far -- none is yet announced/available that I can see.

I have my fingers crossed. (TF is much too good for them to let it rot on the vine).

mine's still updating.... o_O hahaha... idk perhaps my firewall has something to do with it but I easily receive an update notification at least 3 times a day.... :cautious:

Like bellgamin said, I really hope the bring it back to life cause it's a great addition to almost any security setup. :thumb:

Why does it need "brought back to life"? If it still functions, blocks threats and is receiving updates, I don't consider it dead. I know it's a popular thing around here to pronounce anything bought by Symantec or a couple of other big vendors, dead and/or unworthy, but I don't subscribe to that line of thinking. It's lasted this long under their watch as an effective and free application, no need to start shoveling dirt out of the ground for any "funeral" yet.

I barely started to use it around march this year. But according to their forum members, the last update was delivered sometime around june 2009.

I strongly agree. That's why I still consider it worth of being included in my security setup. It still works just fine. At least for me.

Obviously not, if you're getting 3 notifications a day.

I am told (I am not an expert) that TF hasn't kept pace with the behaviors of some of the newer types of malware. It hasn't been updated in well over a year. The "other" stand-alone behavior blocker, Mamutu, has been updated a couple of times during that period.

On the other hand, TF enables the user to develop his own custom rules, moreso than is the case with Mamutu. In fact, TF has a rather excellent Wizard for setting custom rules -- simple enough for even intermediate users. Better yet, one of the resident gurus around here {Kees1958} has developed some excellent custom rules for those who want to use them. Some of them have actually been incorporated into TF so that all you need to do is activate them. I do not know which, however, because I am not running TF at the moment.

Here are a few links. I haven't tested them in quite a while so be sure & let me know if my list needs updating. . . .

For those who want to painlessly give TF a test drive, the last time I checked TF, it did NOT require a restart during installation so you can trial it in Shadow Mode.

But the version never changes neither the def's date and suspiciously, every time I try a manual update it always finds a new def file to download.
Even the copyright clearly says: 2004-2009 PC Tools

"PC Tools, ThreatFire and other PC Tools brand and product names used herein are trademarks or registered trademarks of PC Tools Technology Pty Ltd in the United States and/or other countries"

If it was up-to-date it should reflect the acquisition by Symantec

So, to me it looks like after being bought by Symantec they just sent it to the recycle bin.

Thanks for verifying my OP. I just knew that pasting in a direct quote would just confuse the heck out of things here. And purely speculating, the "sometime next week" part would have a lot to do with your that I can see thing. ;)

Thanks for posting the update. I am anxious to try it.

Any change log? I can't find their beta forum where this is discussed.

I just tested, set on level 4. At first it seemed to blocked everything, but MBAM showed items got though, and my browser got a redirect. It seems better at detecting you are about to get infected than actually blocking the threat. Still has a tiny memory footprint. No new gui.

Great add-on to another av program, but I would not run it alone.
