I do not know what they fixed but my problems downloading hotmail email into outlook 2010 remain intact. The send and receive on both outlook accounts always fail on the first try with error code (0x80041059) "Could not authenticate against windows live ID service. Please try again later" or a variation on the above error. I have tried various methods, searched online, installed and reinstalled both outlook and the outlook connector multiple times, removed and re-added my hotmail accounts, but to no avail. I sincerely hope one of these days the hotshot engineers at microsoft will nail down this bug, so one can have a smooth outlook - hotmail experience.

Have you tried to set up the email account in Outlook 2010 manually?

    Try these settings:

Your Name: You know your name
    Email Address: youremail@hotmail.com
    Account Type: POP3
    Incoming mail server: pop3.live.com
    Outgoing mail server: smtp.live.com

    Login Information:
User Name: youremail@hotmail.com (don't forget to add @hotmail.com)
    Password: your password
    Check (remember password)

    Under more settings:

    First Tab: General:
Mail Account: Give a name to your email account

    Second Tab: Outgoing Server
Check (My Outgoing Server (SMTP) requires authntication)
    Log on using:
User Name: youremail@hotmail.com (don't forget to add @hotmail.com)
    Password: your password
    Check (remember password)

    Fourth Tab: Advanced
    Incoming server (POP3): 110
    Outgoing server (STMP): 587
Use the following type of encrypted connection: TLS

Thanks, but these settings are for downloading hotmail using the POP protocol. I prefer the newer MAPI from Microsoft or the standard IMAP. There are quite a few advantages in using these newer protocols over the older POP.

The problem that I am facing is not due to my using MAPI instead of POP, but there is some problem in how the outlook connector connects to the hotmail server to download mail into outlook 2010. Windows live mail desktop does not suffer from these problems as it does not use the outlook connector.

I was hoping they would correct these problems in the new version of the outlook connector but they are still there.
