New optical disc tech could make $5 per TB possible

    One very important specification not mentioned above is the following (my bold underline added):
    Now "media" is not the same as "data retention" but if they mean the data stored on these disks will remain "viable" for 100 years, that indeed is remarkable.

    Research results into computer data storage capacity (and forms) which is within acceptable capabilities and new techniques are showing some exciting promise. The proof will be in the market just how improved those can be for the consumer, business etc. But is impressive in a sense this optical disc invention

    Past history has shown us that one of the bigger issues with long term archives is the availability of the necessary hardware and software decades down the road that can actually read and recover that data. Tape backups used to be common. How many today have floppy disk drives? So having one of those 100 year old disks with all your archived data may be great, but not if your current computer hardware is incapable of accessing the data.
