FYI I believe if you already have 32 bit the newer version will also be 32 bit if you use the internal updater.

What is the advantage of the 64-bit version over the 32-bit version?

Do you have to uninstall the 32-bit version before installing the 64-bit version?

I only removed the 32bit version after installing the 64bit & making sure it used my firefox profile, I do wish they would change the name of the setup file as both are just called Firefox Setup 42.0.exe. They should change it to Firefox x86 Setup 42.0.exe & Firefox x64 Setup 42.0.exe

I am new to the 64-bit Firefox builds and specifically trying to get an understanding of how the Flash Player brokering/sandboxing process is implemented with regard to 64-bit builds.

    On 32-bit Firefox we have:
    1. > plugin-container.exe
    2. >> SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\FlashPlayerPlugin_19_0_0_226.exe
    3. >>> SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32_19_0_0_226.dll
    NPSWF32*.dll running under FlashPlayerPlugin*.exe running under plugin-container.exe

    On 64-bit Firefox we have:
    1. > plugin-container.exe
    2. >> System32\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF64_19_0_0_226.dll
    NPSWF64*.dll running under plugin-container.exe

So 64-bit Firefox builds seem to skip the brokering step done through FlashPlayerPlugin*.exe, therefore that leaves me wondering if 64-bit Firefox builds running Flash Player are any less secure in comparison to 32-bit Firefox builds running Flash Player due to this missing brokering step?

Is there anyone who understands the difference here who can shed some light on this?

Thank you for your time. :)

I would uninstall the 32 bit first. The profile is the same and works fine. The problem I had is that the 64 bit version would crash immediately on launch. Not every time, but enough. Went back to 32 bit. No problems.

Ghostery 5.4.8.1 isn't playing well in 42.0. Could be that new fangled Tracking Protection or... um, something else. Lot's of posts about it on their forum, so the developers are in the know about it.

I haven't tried falsing privacy.trackingprotection.enabled yet as I want to play with this completed (took 'em long enough) Mozilla/Disconnect component. I'll just keep Ghostery disabled and check for updates now and then.

And yes, I know Ghostery is junk/spyware/all-around-really-bad so save yourself the effort of letting me know. :thumb:

I haven't noticed any problems with Ghostery on the 32-bit version of FF42 yet.

Fyi Privacy Badger and Ublock Origin are working normally in Firefox 42 (32 bit).

Can't you change the name of the setup before launch.

Yes, unsigned for me too, but was it showing "signed" in FF v41? In any case that's something the EFF has to take care.

Yeah I could have done that but as I downloaded both the 32 bit & 64 bit I ended up with the Firefox Setup 42.0.exe & Firefox Setup 42.0(1).exe. Since Mozilla has released both version it shouldn't be a issue for them to rename the files before they are downloaded as there is now way to tell what version it is until you install it.

Ah, so mouse hover does not reveal any x64 reference.
Maybe that's why ghacks writes I need to remove 32bit before installing 64bit to use same profile.
Is it that simple that by just adding e.g., "x64" to firefoxsetup.exe.
I can install x64 along side 32 bit and share same profile.
    TIA
    Edit: I misread ghacks.

From what I have read & done myself you can have both versions installed at the same time. I only removed the 32 bit version after installing the 64 bit version & making sure it used my firefox profile. Mouse over & even right clicking & going to properties & details has no info on whether it is 32 bit or 64 bit version. Most other software companies name the files either 32 bit or 64 bit.

Yeah I saw that article on Ghacks site, my issue with mozilla is that they don't have the system architecture in the setup file name. When I download updated setup files for the software I use I always get both the 32 bit & 64 bit version & most other software makes it clear in the setup file's name whether it is 32 bit or 64 bit. I use Chrome so the 32 bit setup file was named Firefox Setup 42.0.exe & when I downloaded the 64 bit version Chrome renamed it to Firefox Setup 42.0(1).exe as it had the same filename as the 32 bit version.

The only real way to tell what version you are installing is to see what Program Files folder it installs to.

I hear ya'. I was thinking leaving 32bit on board for comparative.
Apparently, you were quickly satisfied 64bit as an enhancement.
I misread ghacks re need to uninstall 32bit. My bad.
    Thanks!

As a workaround you could download the full offline installers and rename them. I just did and while there's no info in properties at least there's a difference in file size; the 64 bit installer is a little larger.
