New Bomb Threat Email Scam Campaign Demanding $20K in Bitcoin

A new twist in the scam extortion emails that have been so popular recently is a new email campaign that contains a bomb threat stating they will detonate a bomb if the recipient does not send a $20,000 USD bitcoin payment.

There are reports of these emails being received throughout the U.S.A and contain subject lines similar to "My device is inside your building", "No need to be heroic", or "Rescue service will complicate the situation".
The New York Police Department has already started to investigate these threats and will investigate each call they receive. At this time they have found the threats to be not credible so far.

It's pretty much impossible to get $20,000 in bitcoin in a day even if you already have a verified exchange account. Also, extortion is bad enough, but the bomb threats likely make it a national security issue.

Bomb Threats Emailed Around the World

Original release date: December 13, 2018
The National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC), part of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency (CISA), is aware of a worldwide email campaign targeting businesses and organizations with bomb threats. The emails claim that a device will detonate unless a ransom in Bitcoin is paid.
If you receive a bomb threat email, NCCIC recommends the following actions:

Do not respond or try to contact the sender.
Do not pay the ransom.
Report the email to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) or to a local FBI Field Office.

"Multiple IPs involved in sending these bomb threats also sent various types of sextortion email that we saw in the previous campaign," said Jaeson Schultz of Cisco Talos.
According to AppRiver, the bomb threat emails and the older sextortion campaigns all came from the 194.58.X.X IP space.

"The attackers have returned to their empty threats of harming the individual recipient," Schultz said. "This time, they threaten to throw acid on the victim." A copy of an email carrying this latest threat is available below.

In late August, our mail traps started picking up some unusual blackmail messages. In them, cybercriminals claim to have planted a tetryl-charged bomb somewhere in the recipient’s office and say it will be detonated unless a ransom is paid or if police activity is observed near the building.

In reality, of course, there is no bomb — it’s an empty threat mailed indiscriminately to companies of all sizes. Cybercriminals count on scaring the victim into a knee-jerk response, because with time to think, they will realize that paying ransom solves nothing — if there is a bomb in the building, it’s not going anywhere.

The extortionists aren’t choosing specific targets for such threats; they use huge mailing lists and hope that at least some of the recipients will take the threat seriously enough to pay up.
Another potentially distinguishing feature of this new wave of extortion e-mails is the potential punishment: Blackmail is a crime in itself, but some countries have separate laws for false bomb threats.
