There is a download link in version tracker.com for the free version.Version is 9.0.0.386 it is a 28.6 MB file.
When I clicked on the download it did not work but after choosing the alternative link at the bottom of the page I downloaded the program.I am not sure if I should wait and get it from the Avira site.

I installed it to my virtual machine and it is working fine.It looks like the premium version. It has a new interface. And you can choose adware and spyware from the extended threat section.Well Done Avira.
In the configuration menu General tab I see a new thing. It is enable VMI support. It is checked by default.

i see on their site comparison between Antivir and the security suite, the security suite had a feature called AntiBot and says it protects against bot networks, what exactly does this feature do that will have extra protection compared to the AV only?

Enables some features for parallel scanning/prefetching of files, only available on multi-core systems. It also uses a bit more RAM in favor of speed

Does this dual core optimization also apply to HT enabled processors like Intel Atom N270 found in netbooks? I know HT doesn't delive the same performance as true dual core CPU but still.

Looks like Avira.com is hit by a lot of traffic. The site is really slow to open .. (atleast for me)

It doesn't really mention hyperthreading processors (like Pentium D HT or Atom). Just multicore or multi CPU systems.

The things i like so far:
    smaller, faster updates
    gui opens faster
no splashscreen anymore when doubleclicking the tray icon
on demand scan shows a summary window of detected malware at the end of the scan
