Many of us are barely getting acquainted with .NET 5 and all of its goodies yet here comes .NET 6 marching forward at the speed of light headed into its second to last preview release. There are many improvements and new features in tow, we're going to dive into a few here and get you all the information you need to ensure you're ready to reap its benefits!

x64 Emulation is coming along
Support for Apple Silicon and ARM64 is present however its not quite where it needs to be as it lacks straight forward emulation support. The team is working through some necessary features in order to improve the x64 development experience. However its good to see this progress and undoubtedly this will be ready for the general availability release.

There are many more improvements along for the ride with this release. To ensure you're getting the best results, make sure you are running the latest version of Visual Studio 2022 preview as well as .NET 6 Preview 6. For more information head over to the official announcement blog post.

Microsoft: Announcing .NET 6 Preview 6

We are happy to release .NET 6 Preview 6. Preview 6 is the second to last preview before we enter the RC period. There will be two RCs. This release itself is relatively small, while Preview 7 will be bigger. After that, we’re down to quality fixes until the final release in November. We’re looking forward to a great new .NET release.

Benchmarks indicate big performance improvements in .NET 6

The upcoming next major version of Microsoft .NET, .NET 6, improves performance of many operations significantly according to Microsoft's benchmark tests.

A new post on the Dotnet developer blog by Stephen Toub,
Partner Software Engineer, .NET, offers insights on the benchmark tests and the performance improvements compared to previous versions of .NET.

According to the post, about 6500 merged pull requests landed in .NET 6, excluding automated pull requests by bots. Of these, about 550 improve performance in one area or another, according to Microsoft.

Developers interested in .NET may download the latest preview release, .NET 6.0 Preview 7 at the time of writing, from Microsoft's Developer website. It is available for Windows (ARM, x64, x32), Linux (Arm32, Arm64, x64) and Mac OS X (Arm64, x64). Only binaries provided for Linux, installers and binaries for Windows and Mac OS.

Microsoft: Performance Improvements in .NET 6

But how far back compatible is it? Some folks/user's still run great automated programs from yesteryears versions that carry forward. Yours truly is one of them.

That said .NET 5 not yet installed here but no issue if needed.

Microsoft: Announcing .NET 6 Release Candidate 1 (September 14, 2021)

We are happy to release .NET 6 Release Candidate 1. It is the first of two “go live” release candidate releases that are supported in production. For the last month or so, the team has been focused exclusively on quality improvements that resolve functional or performance issues in new features or regressions in existing ones.

.NET 6 RC1 has been tested and is supported with Visual Studio 2022 Preview 4. Visual Studio 2022 enables you to leverage the Visual Studio tools developed for .NET 6 such as development in .NET MAUI, Hot Reload for C# apps, new Web Live Preview for WebForms, and other performance improvements in your IDE experience.
Support for .NET 6 RC1 is coming soon in Visual Studio 2022 for Mac Preview 1, which is currently available as a private preview.

Microsoft: Announcing .NET 6 Release Candidate 2 (October 12, 2021)

We are excited to release .NET 6 Release Candidate 2. It is the second of two “go live” release candidate releases that are supported in production. For the last couple months, the team has been focused exclusively on quality improvements. There are a lot of new features in the release, which only fully come together near the end. The team is currently validating end-to-end workflows to find the places where design intentions and technical reality don’t yet fully match.

We’ve heard from users that upgrading production sites to .NET 6 RC1 has been both “boring” (non-event) and “exciting” (significant performance improvements). We’re confident that RC2 will continue that trend of having no surprises and exciting results.

Microsoft angers the .NET open source community with a controversial decision

Microsoft has spent the past 10 years embracing open-source software and, at several points, even admitting it loves Linux and the open source community. The Linux Foundation even praised Microsoft for working with the open source community after the company joined the foundation nearly five years ago.

Microsoft has quietly removed a key part of Hot Reload in the upcoming release of .NET 6 this week, a feature that essentially allows developers to get instant feedback when they’re creating a project and change code to immediately see the results. It’s a big selling point for Google’s rival Dart programming language and Flutter toolkit, and Microsoft has been playing catchup to bring it to .NET and Visual Studio.
A controversial business decision inside Microsoft has left many questioning the company’s commitment to open source. Multiple sources at Microsoft tell The Verge that it has also angered lots of developers inside the company but that they’ve effectively been told not to complain.

Microsoft has been testing near-final “Release Candidate” versions of .NET 6 that allowed developers to use Hot Reload across a variety of environments and platforms with dotnet watch, including the popular Visual Studio Code development environment. A Release Candidate generally means Microsoft considers it production-ready, feature-complete, and that people should just beware of bugs before it’s fully released.

But a last-minute change announced earlier this week means Microsoft “will enable Hot Reload functionality only through Visual Studio 2022 so we can focus on providing the best experiences to the most users.”

Sorry for any confusion. To clarify, given the number of scenarios we are working on, we had to prioritize :(. As a result, Hot Reload will not release as a feature of dotnet watch tool. We are doubling down on VS 2022 with support for VS4Mac coming later

Microsoft decides not to drop Hot Reload from .NET 6 after open-source community backlash

When Microsoft announced plans to remove Hot Reload from the upcoming release of .NET 6 there was outcry. Developers have been able to use to feature to edit he source code of a running app, seeing immediate effects and saving huge amounts of time.

After being battered with complaints, particularly from the open-source community, Microsoft has reversed its decision and the functionality will be re-enabled ahead of general availability of .NET 6.

In a blog post explaining the move, the director of program management for .NET, Scott Hunter, says: "Last week, our blog post and the removal of the Hot Reload capability from the .NET SDK repo led to a lot of feedback from the community".
He goes on to explain:

First and foremost, we want to apologize. We made a mistake in executing on our decision and took longer than expected to respond back to the community. We have approved the pull request to re-enable this code path and it will be in the GA build of the .NET 6 SDK.

Members of the open-source community were recently furious with Microsoft for apparently intentionally removing a feature from the open-source .Net 6 software development platform (which Microsoft manages) so that professional developers would instead use Visual Studio 2022, Microsoft’s quite expensive but very powerful IDE.

It turns out developers inside Microsoft were equally angry, and Microsoft’s reversal of their decision has not placated them, with many fearing the next occasion where Microsoft places its short-term financial interests over their engagement with the open-source community.
This has resulted in the release of an anonymous letter to Microsoft management in which the author directly accuses the company of lying to protect management.

They expressed concern that Microsoft will make further efforts to cripple .Net 6 in an effort to push VS 2022, despite open source tools being quite popular inside Microsoft itself.
The author asked for a transparent investigation into how Hot Reload was pulled and changes to Microsoft’s management so such rash decisions could not be made again.
