I am an IT professional (microsoft camp).

As much as I have learned about MS products over the years one thing I can say is that I once turned an old box into a linux router. This taught me more about networking (TCP, IP routing, VPN, etc) then MS did. However, it did take me infinitely longer to set up however, it was a great lesson.

    There is my two cents.

    Chaz.

Of course, testing and trying and playing with devices is definitely the best way to learn, in my opinion. Also, reading carefully user manuals (freely downloadable) of enterprise devices can be very useful.

However, if you are interested in security as a process, you NEED to read "Beyond Fear" and "Secrets and Lies" by Bruce Schneier.
