I keep checking in here to see if ESET is stable and out of beta but there's about 100 topics about it so it's not immediately clear.

I think it would be nice to have a sticky topic that says either:
    "ESET Smart Security Now Working!"
    or
"ESET Smart Security Still in Beta/Not Working"

It would be clear and fair. :thumb:

I don't know what good another sticky will do.

I can't imagine what's going on in the ESET Front office. It's almost like they believe that the majority of their customers are satisfied with the newest release of Smart Security. They don't seem care that thousands upon thousands of people are experiencing serious problems with ESS 4.0. Furthermore, ESET doesnt' appear to be phased by all of the negative attention or the "less than satisfactory" reviews they've been getting lately.

Someone may have already tried to explain this to me. I just think it's totally unfathomable for ESET to release such a bug infested product (such as ESS 4.0 and NOD32 4.0) as a NON Beta. They must not have had a very diverse group of environments for testing. I mean it's like all the beta testers that contributed to ESS 4.0's and NOD32 4.0's developement were using very simularly configured systems. What good can come out of "canned" beta testing? There must be at least 50,000 different ways to configure the simplest PC computer system, hardware-, firmware-, and software-wise.

I'm kinda on the fence right now. Don't know if I'm satisfied....or dissatisfied.

    Gosh...

Running off at the fingers again.

    Yeah, yeah, yeah....

    A Sticky...

    yeah...

    That sounds good.

To be honest, I don't think ESET are all that bothered about doing any more work on it. There are enough people in the world who will buy the package to make up for the dissatisfied ones.

The reason I say they are not bothered is the total lack of attempts to try and fix the problem. Just shutting down services which most users will not do, is not a profesional way of trying to fix the problem. This product is supposed to work out of the box which it clearly does not.

All you can say is that ESET's reputation is being damaged by this fiasco. How many people have walked away from ESET products with the current version and not visited the forum or have come here and seen the amount of threads on these problems with no resolution.

Well, I for one am happy with 4.0.417.0. Yes there was some teething problems I had with the older version but all seem to be ironed out for me at least.:)

i don't think anyone else is any different. i have tried 2 other well known security programs, and never had any response from either re a refund or indeed a solution, one gave my pc a blue screen on a clean install on vista every day and the other was just simply the worse written piece of junk i have ever had the mis-fortune of testing, they never responded to a registry issue so i never bought it.
in fact the only company who replied to me was eset re the dns poisoning in fireall log, ok that was over a year ago and they still aint fixed it :) but they told me how to turn it off.
sadly i wonder where eset would be right now if V3 was their first product? v2 was unique im not really sure where V3 and 4 are going, the firewall seems very much like a trial and error failure.

Please create a pcap log using Wireshark with all traffic captured and PM me when done. We'll have a look at it and let you know why the attack is being detected.

Yes! Please post a sticky topic when ESS 4 really works!

I have been using NOD32 for years as my antivirus, along with Ad-Aware Plus, Spybot, and ZoneAlarm Security Suite. I had disabled the antivirus function of ZASS, because I thought NOD32 was a better antivirus program. It took hours initially to set up, with a lot of help from Eset, because of LSP conflicts. But it has worked.

I just got a notice that my NOD32 subscription would expire in a week and discovered that Eset now had its own security suite. I thought I would simplify things by switching to Eset Smart Security. Fortunately, I did it on a trial basis. After uninstalling ZASS and installing ESS (did not uninstall NOD32, as I figured Eset would recognize and deal with its own product), I cannot load Eudora or Ad-Aware! Don't have a day to try all the different permutations, especially after hearing of all the trouble others are having. I'll just restore my Ghost backup I made before these changes and renew NOD32. I've wasted enough time already.

This is hardly caused by ESS/EAV. The only problem I can think of is that you didn't create the appropriate rules to allow the programs to connect to the Internet.

I don't really want to pile on ESET with more new threads about ESS 4.0 problems. That said, let me just agree with the OP (can't wait for the "ESET Smart Security Now Working" sticky!) and post my experience here:

I recently installed version 4.0 of ESS after a long, happy stint (even beta testing) with ESS 3.0. (Caught a bit off guard by the quick V4 change!) Anyway, all was well until I started noticing a pattern of odd system "hangs", halting everything and preventing Task Manager or anything else from running. Argh, it could be anything . . .

All or most of these hangs occurred while simply having µTorrent file-sharing in the background, turning off the monitor, and leaving for half an hour or more. I return, turn on monitor and wireless mouse, and immediately notice the said problem.

Simply put, it looks like: ESS 4.0 + µTorrent + AFK (half-hour) = 66% chance of hang. Reproduced at least a dozen times. I've totally un/reinstalled ESS 4.0.417. No standout errors in the Event Viewer or ESS Firewall log. No memory problems (verified by Memory Diagnostics Tool).

Unfortunately I just thought to log CPU/memory usage with something like EVEREST, which may have clarified exactly what is going on. ESS 3.0.684 is now re-installed and happily co-existing with µTorrent again. No more system hangs (will update if so). I will not be installing any versions of 4.0 for a few months, but when I inevitably do I'll be sure to start logging away in preparation of The Suck.

This screenshot kinda sums this mess up. Notice the red X's--all forced Disruptive Shutdowns brought on by hangs--marking a steady decline after the ESS 4.0 installation. (Previous low rating was related to codecs/thumbnail previews causing Explorer crashes.)

Don't get me wrong, though. ESS 4.0 is great besides this major problem. ;) Clean interface and small footprint as always, with a few new nifty tools . . . just a tad unreliable from my experience.

    A few specs: ESS 4.0.417 • Vista Business SP1 • AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 • ASUS A8N-SLI Premium • Mushkin HP3200 DDR 2GB • XFX 8800 GTS 512MB

Check this https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=239678 because I have same problem as you. See my screenshots and you see where problem is (maybe). For me ESET SS 4 is only "alpha" version. When I install SS 4 then from this time I had 5 reinstall of Vista. Now I am quite fed-up because using SS 4 gets me a lot of time.

I'm not sure they're related, but thanks anyway. Oddly, I never experienced any hangs while I was actually at the PC: No browser slowdowns, no problems during shutdown, etc. Not even file-sharing (µTorrent), browsing web (Firefox) or strenuous activities like encoding hours of video produced a problem. My hangs always occured when I simply ran µTorrent and went AFK for a while.

Because of that I was even thinking the problem was somehow related to my "1-Minute-Warning" (before monitor turns off) screensaver, or something in the Power Options, but even when tweaked the hangs never ceased.

I really wished I'd logged CPU/memory usage . . . As I said, when I someday install ESS 4.0 again (3.0.684 is working fine) I'll be sure to finally log away.

It's been working since day one :cautious:

The only way you'll know if it will work on your rig and software is to install it. If at that time you have issues, start a thread and explain your problem.

That being said, this thread is closed.
