I have MX Linux 23.4 installed on a UFD using Rufus. I'm trying to do a real install opposed to a Live Demo install on another UFD. I'm finding it impossible. On a Lenovo ThinkPad T540P 2014 running W11P 24H2. I'm booting to the Live UFD then trying to do a custom partitioning of the empty UFD. I can't get it to work. I'm trying to remember the stop message I'm getting. Afair it's "You must have at least a 7.7GB root partition." They are 32GB UFDs. I don't know how to do that. I've tried various ways. Help will be appreciated.
zapjb, MBR or UEFI system? I installed MX Linux 23.4 recently but I was using BootIt as the Boot Manager. I made the Linux partition 10 GiB but I was experimenting. I can't recall any issues. https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/my-asus-eeepc-still-rocks-in-2024-with-mx-linux.455068/
I think I've misunderstood what you are attempting. I thought you wanted to install Linux to an internal drive.
zapjb, Standby, I'll try it this morning. Is your intended UFD blank or does it contain a NTFS partition?
make a mbr MX ufd For the UFD that will have MX installed make sure it is a MBR disk, not a GPT disk My UFD was 32 GB delete all partitions on the UFD. Don't wipe the UFD as this will remove the MBR. Remove sata cables from all drives. Essential. When installing OS to MBR disks you don't want the installer writing booting files to HD0. Boot MX UFD click Install MX Linux wait for it to find the drives (checking installation media) next select Customize the disk layout next On the Choose partitions screen I saw (It could be sda or sdb depending on your system)... sdb 28.6 GB DOS Right click that line and select Add partition You now see a new line sdb1 (or sda1) In the Size field I see 1.0 MB. 1 is highlighted so use the keyboard to change it to 20000. Click away. My field now says 19.5 GB Click the drop down arrow in the Use For field and select / This will be the Root partition. The Label field now says root. Left click in the Format field (for the sdb1 line) and select ext4. It could already be ext4. Don't tick the Encrypt or the Check boxes. Next Start On the next screen, Installation in progress you should see a dot in MBR Leave the tick in Install GRUB for Linux and Windows Location to install on MBR (should already be there) System boot disk should be the UFD you intend to use. Mine says 28.6 GB whichs is the 32 GB UFD. Leave the tick for Create a swap file. No tick for hibernation. Installation takes several minutes. It's slow. Seems to hang at 22% and then speeds up, slightly. Next Next (accept SaMBa)(only if you plan to use it) Locale Time Zone Put a tick in System clock uses local time Time format Next Login name password Root account I checked Autologin Next Wait Finish Boot your new MX UFD. It's slow. Sits on Loading initial ramdisk for several minutes. Finally you are in MX. What do you think of it? Reattach SATA cables.
Thank you. But I'm not not willing to disconnect the SATA connector. It's a laptop & the SSD screw is badly stripped. Haven't had coffee yet. My demo install only takes a minute to boot. I'll have to look this over later.
It's hit & miss with that badly stripped screw that holds the SSD in. Only way I'm trying that SSD screw again is (God forbid) SSD failure.
