If I want to use an image of a partition to copy data (not OS) from HDD to an SSD, will the restore always be same size as the original if it has space to do so? I have a 230 GB partition on HDD, 400 unallocated on the SSD but there's really only 55 GB of data.

Think I could shrink the partition on SSD using Disk Management afterwards. Using Macrium Reflect 7 free.

Shouldn't be a problem... or you can shrink during the restoration process using the "Undo/Layout" options.

Ah thanks TheRollbackFrog. Other sites w/users who seem adept at MR can't even understand the Q. Appreciate the tip.

    Cheers.

Just remember that when you change any partition size of that image upon restoration (during or after), any retention mgmt you may have active in your definitions will change and a new FULL will be executed at the next scheduled backup... the disk geometry will have changed therefore new backup chain will be started.

Thanks. I usually don't use schedules.

Wanted to update anyone still interested. I found using the free ver 7 Macrium Reflect that I could only restore an image of one partition to the entire drive. Maybe the paid ver allows restore to a partition, so you could do that multiple times.

I was surprised to find after imaging my entire HDD, and restoring to the non-OS SSD, that the default settings did not delete a previous restore of one partition. It simply used the remaining available space (formatted space).

By default it writes only used clusters so my 2nd SSD now has my two partitions - automatically restored much smaller - and I deleted a previously restored "duplicate" partition. Then I simply renamed drive letters.

These links may be useful for those trying to simply move data, who need the 'verify' option vs. cloning:
