Wanted to get some advice re change over from Netgear Ready NAS NVX (old now) to new NAS.
Current device 4HDD with Netgear "X-Raid"

    Hardware agnostic.
ReadyNAS uses Linux Ext2/Ext3 file system.
Netgear to new Netgear might be easiest.
Happy to consider other HW options as target
Happy to consider NAS with SSD as target.

Can I just set new device as network drive and copy over (abt 2TB of 'stuff')
CAn I direct copy NAS device to NAS device?

Any suggestions re "best" HW appreciated.

    Regards
    Longboard

PS: lots of info available in the www re HW, less info around re copying from eg: Netgear to Synology
    Thx

    Yeah, followed that template.
The new NAS box setup is abit of a pain:
    -research re options
    - find retailers with stock
-new hw, new discs, setup, allow RAID to fill in
    - rsync takes some time.
    - strip out old HW and recycle, DBAN the discs
    - reset network static ips and drive mappings, shares, redo all the shortcuts and links on all the household boxen
    - reset remote logins
    - reset imaging apps
    - reset cloud backups
    - register warranties
    .........

Not even sure why I even went with 4drive NAS again: mostly just for transcoding/plex, also, I guess for local network speeds, remote in and baseline for proper cloud backups. (NAS is not a back-up !!)

HDD sizes and affordability have, imo, really altered the storage/backup options . It's kind of comical that one can walk into any shop and walk out with a couple of 16TB drives in a small bag. This box being redone just as SDD are reaching really useful capacities now: no(less) noise, less heat, less power, possibly more reliable than platters.

Without even trying, over the last 20 years I have accumulated 4 TB of digital stuffs. LOL, how "big" is your life? Mine looks a bit small on paper :argh:

That might be a somewht interesting thread: "What is your HW/Network setup as related to storage locally and remote/offsite backup"

    Regards
