More free space after restore?

In the process of moving from an 80 GB hard drive to a 160 hardrive the amoutn of used space when down. It appears that when I copied the image from a nearly full 80GB harddirve to the new one that the amount of space used went from 74GB to only about 40GB. Everything seems to be working okay but I am puzzled about what happened. Both are partitioned as NTFS. Looking at the defrag utility, the drive is definitely less fragmented than before I copied the partition. The drive was so full that I was not able to completely defrag the disk before but now it is only half full.

Can anyone explain what is going on?
