More changes coming to the Play Store: score ratings, form factors, and more

Google has been making many changes to the Play Store in the last few weeks. It would seem that no area of the Play Store is untouched. The latest feature that is getting a change is the score ratings. The score rating system will be altered to be localized and even device-specific.

To date, the review scores on the Play Store have been aggregated. Google used an average score from reviews from users across the world to calculate the final score. This final score is represented by the stars when you look at the apps and games rating.

Google will begin to localize the ratings for apps. This would mean that we will get aggregated scores for our specific country.
Such an app might receive negative reviews from users that are not the intended target. Localizing the ratings will help give users a more relevant representation of their country.

Then, in early 2022, form factors will also start to influence app ratings. This will mean that ratings from tablets will aggregate separately from the rating from phones.

Closing words
These upcoming changes to the rating system on the Google Play Store are a welcomed change. This will give a much more accurate presentation of the rating for apps taking into account your country and your device. It seems all Google wants to do these days is to remove valuable stats from public view.
In a bizarre move, Google Play seems to be testing the removal of the "last updated" section from listings in the Android app.

User reports have started to pile up on Reddit, pointing out that the "last updated" section, typically found in the app's description, was missing from listings entirely. We've seen this behavior on some of our own devices, and on others the changelog and app description have vanished as well. We haven't observed any of this behavior on the web version of the Google Play Store — only on the Android app.

If this is intentional, this is something that can be particularly troublesome with some apps and games, as you'd have no way of quickly telling if something is in active development or not.

This seems to be a limited A/B test as of now. We're also considering the possibility that this could be a bug — as we said before, both the changelog and the app description were missing for us. If it's indeed intentional, we sure hope Google doesn't push this to everyone.

Google is testing a redesigned Play Store website

Even though the Play Store application for Android has gone through many design iterations over the years, the Play Store website has been frozen in time. For years, it has had the same early Material Design look, but that is finally changing. Google is now testing a new Play Store site design in some regions, which seems like a substantial improvement from the current layout.

The new design (via Android Police) is seemingly only rolled out in a few regions so far, such as Korea and Taiwan, and it varies by user account. Content is more stretched out, instead of locked inside a horizontally-centered row. The page background is now white, icons are larger, and some app listings (like Netflix) have a header image that stretches across the top of the screen.

Overall, this looks like a step in the right direction for the Play Store website, without the usual handful of regressions that come with most redesigns. Here’s hoping Google rolls it out to everyone soon.

Finally, though, Google is giving the Play Store a design overhaul on the web.

Unfortunately, we don’t yet have easy access to this new redesign, as it seems to be rolling out on a server-side switch. It seems that some regional variations of the Play Store web client have success in enabling the new design, but it’s a lottery.

Google rolling out prominent ‘Offers’ tab in the Play Store for some

Back in October, the Play Store got a Material You redesign that was pretty straightforward in that it only touched the homescreens. Google now looks to be adding an “Offers” tab to the Play Store that makes for a quite cluttered bottom bar.

Most people have four tabs in the bottom bar of the Play Store. If you subscribe to Play Pass, it grows to five. The new default could soon be five for all users with “Offers” slotting in-between “Apps” and “Movies & TV,” which gets horribly truncated in the process. It uses a standard price tag icon, and could result in a maximum of six items but Google will presumably move Play Pass in that case.

This “Offers” tab for the Google Play Store is not yet widely rolled out on devices we checked today, and we’ve only seen one report of it so far. As such, it’s unclear if this is an A/B test or a finalized feature.

Do you want to feel old? Google Play launched in 2012! In other words, Google's digital store has now existed for a decade. Google Play has become a centralized digital store for both software and media, including mobile apps, games, books, television shows, and movies.
Is Google Play a good store, though? That is debatable. While it is has plenty of quality offerings, it is polluted with low-quality apps and games too.

While Google Play isn't perfect, it is still the best option for Android users. To celebrate the store's 10th birthday, the search giant has decided to redesign the Google Play logo to align it more closely with the design of its other apps, such as Gmail and Photos. You can see the new logo at the top of this page, while the old one can be seen below. As you can see, it is quite similar, but with more rounded corners and new color shades.

The Google Play Store will now implement a time buffer for ratings and reviews

It looks like Google is taking some measures in order to curb suspicious reviews that might pop up on the Google Play Store. The company announced changes to its procedures, where there will now be up to a 24-hour delay with user-submitted ratings or reviews. Google states that by implementing this time gap, it will make it easier to filter out suspicious activity. During the 24-hour period, developers will still be able to comment and interact with ratings or reviews left on the Play Store, they just won’t be immediately be available to view by the public.

For the most part, leaving reviews and feedback are excellent ways to let developers know how you feel about their products. If constructive, it can enhance the experience for not only the developer but also the user. Unfortunately, there are a lot of scenarios where reviews can be manipulated, or the feedback can just become toxic.

According to Google, a fake or spam review is an inaccurate review or one review that has been posted multiple times. It also considers posting the same review under multiple accounts as being categorized as fake or spam. Finally, it states that misrepresenting one’s identity or connections are also not acceptable.

By adding a 24-hour buffer for reviews, it can give developers and Google more time to sort through whatever feedback comes in. While a normal scenario will most likely never require this kind of buffer, there have been incidents in the past where a massive flood of reviews comes in, whether it is from genuine appreciation or spiteful hate.
