I have had my default search engine missing for a while but just never got around to fixing it. I was hijacked a while back and I followed the instructions from another forum but after I was done IE would not search from the address bar any loger.

If I type "anything" in the address bar I get the following:

    Address bar changes to: http:///?%20anything

Browser window: The page cannot be displayed(plus the usual
    message that IE displays)
I ran Ad-aware and NAV. I also ran CWShedder which found only one file.
This is the HJT log after all the scans:

    Re:Missing search page in IE

    Hi Jeepster,

    Welcome to Wilders.

You have RapidBlaster. Download and run RapidBlasterKiller.

Some of the items are from viruses. I would strongly suggest you do an online virus scan and run a resident AV scanner if you are not already. Some good online scans can be found HERE.

Before you start, please unzip or move HijackThis to a separate folder. The program will make backups in the folder it's in. These easily get lost in a temporary folder.

Please note that after the above steps, you may not be able to find all of the items below.
Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {000E7270-CC7A-0786-8E7A-DA09B51938A6} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\n3tpa1.dll (file missing)

    O2 - BHO: NavErrRedir Class - {A045DC85-FC44-45be-8A50-E4F9C62C9A84} - (no file)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Wupdate driver] WUPDADTE.EXE

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Generic Communicator] taskmngr.exe

    O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [Microsoft Generic Communicator] taskmngr.exe

    O4 - Global Startup: GStartup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\GMT\GMT.exe

    O16 - DPF: {F5192746-22D6-41BD-9D2D-1E75D14FBD3C} (ddm_download.ddm_control) - http://216.65.38.226/crack.CAB

Please download the latest copy of CWShredder. Run, click Fix and follow the instructions.

There also may be hidden files. See HERE for how to show hidden files.

Then reboot into safe mode and delete:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\n3tpa1.dll
WUPDADTE.EXE <-- You may have to do a search for this file.
taskmngr.exe <-- You may have to do a search for this file.
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\GMT\ <-- entire folder

Reboot and then post a fresh HijackThis log.

I also urge you to update your copy of Windows by going HERE. This will help cut down on your chances of reinfestation.

    Regards,
    Kent

    Kent,

    Jeepster,

    Just a note...

If you did not do all the steps in the order I gave, the items are likely to come back. You had a combination of spyware, adware, and viruses. Fixing these things in HJT does not remove them from your system completely, it just keeps them from starting back up when you boot to safe mode to delete them. HJT can not remove all of RapidBlaster or be sure your system is clean from viruses. The first steps were important in proper removal of these items. Once you have viruses on your system, they can compromise your resident AV, hence the need for the online AV scan.

    HTH.....

    Regards,
    Kent

    Snowbound,

I could not find the files that I was to delete in safe mode. I even made sure that all the hidden files were shown. I did a search for the file names and folders and nothing came up so I assumed that HJT had gotten rid of them. What should I do now?
