Malware strains have gradually become the leading cause of infection targeting millions of devices worldwide annually. A new report from Atlas VPN revealed that the PC and mobile gaming industry is the current big target of malware authors and Minecraft is their favorite game to bait gamers.
New Survey Reveals Startling Details
Atlas VPN researchers created a list of the most-targeted games both for mobile and PC. Minecraft topped the chart on both platforms. According to the researcher, nearly 184,887 players were impacted on PC as they downloaded malware hidden inside a Minecraft file.

Moreover, there were more than three million total detections of infected Minecraft files. Conversely, on mobile devices, Minecraft-related malware infected 44,335 devices while antivirus software detected 300,000 malware cases, reported Kaspersky Security Network.

It is understandable why malware developers are so keen on targeting Minecraft fans. The game is massively popular on both mobile and PC, for instance, as of 2021, Minecraft was home to over 131 million players.

Minecraft Servers Under Attack: Microsoft Warns About Cross-Platform DDoS Botnet

Microsoft on Thursday flagged a cross-platform botnet that's primarily designed to launch distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against private Minecraft servers.

Called MCCrash, the botnet is characterized by a unique spreading mechanism that allows it to propagate to Linux-based devices despite originating from malicious software downloads on Windows hosts.

"The botnet spreads by enumerating default credentials on internet-exposed Secure Shell (SSH)-enabled devices," the company said in a report. "Because IoT devices are commonly enabled for remote configuration with potentially insecure settings, these devices could be at risk to attacks like this botnet."
This also means that the malware could persist on IoT devices even after removing it from the infected source PC. The tech giant's cybersecurity division is tracking the activity cluster under its emerging moniker DEV-1028.

The Microsoft Defender for IoT research team recently analyzed a cross-platform botnet that originates from malicious software downloads on Windows devices and succeeds in propagating to a variety of Linux-based devices.

Our analysis of the DDoS botnet revealed functionalities specifically designed to target private Minecraft Java servers using crafted packets, most likely as a service sold on forums or darknet sites.
