Also, you will still be able to upgrade by using the Media Creation Tool, or an ISO.

It's good to see that you can still upgrade for free.

I doubt that removing free upgrade to Windows 10 is in their best interest. They'll have the same problem with low adoption rate as they had with Windows XP retirement.

My son gave me a WinBook tablet in Sep. 2015 running 8.1. I didn't like 8.1 and didn't use it and was going to give it back. He connected it to his network, it updated to v10...1709, all by itself, for free, and he then set it up with the apps that I want so that I do like to use it now. I'm still using W7 on my desktop but may finally switch to V10 if the tablet continues to run with no problems.

I converted one PC a few days ago did a clean install and all went well, after playing around and tweaking Windows 10 some I'm starting to like it a little bit I'm thinking about doing another one I hope this free offer stays around for a little while yet :thumb:

Drawing a 'Line in the Sand' and not following through has consequences. Usually a hit to credibility and/or reputation.
There may not be anything to it other than MS missing their own deadline - an oops moment. If it is deliberate, it makes them look desperate.

Because people are not eager to upgrade to Windows 10, so the current market share of Windows 10 is still below Microsoft's expectations. That's why the free upgrade still works. Yes they did it on purpose. These greedy corporates never give your something for free if it does not benefit them.

I have to agree that it can't be an accident. It is problematic not knowing how long it will go on for though. I can't upgrade a customer's computer not know if Windows 10 is going to activate at the end of the process. If they really want everyone to move to 10 they should just state that the upgrade will remain free indefinitely.

If your able to start the process the DL is free, if not you would be asked for a key right away and not be able to start the DL.

What happens if we download it now and try to upgrade after January 16th? I assume that activation will fail.

From what I've seen once you start the DL/ update process you have to follow through and install there's no "saving" till later.

It's possible that Microsoft will extend the deadline again.

Microsoft has every interest in getting people to upgrade.

They even gave away LTSB for a pittance - because they want Windows users on this platform.

I bought a Surface Book 18 months ago. Paid too much, I think. But, that is the way it goes! ...that is not a cheap option to [get] the upgrade! :argh:

You can always image your machine, upgrade to Win10 and restore the image. Once a machine has activated Win10 it will always been activated for Win10 with a digital license.

Microsoft will change the terms to apply a free upgrade offer only to new builds of Windows 10 as they come out - around twice a year.
