Microsoft is working to create its most powerful Xbox yet as it gears up for the next wave of gaming console hardware. Xbox shared some details on its next hardware at E3 and it sounds appropriately next-gen.

The company teased some huge factoids in a teaser about what it’s calling “Project Scarlett.” The upcoming console will have 8K capability, will be able to handle frame rates up to 120fps and will utilize SSD storage to keep load times low. The hardware will be powerful enough to enable real-time ray tracing.
“This generation is going to be a bigger leap than any generation before,” a video describing the new hardware detailed. Microsoft says the new hardware will be four times as powerful as the Xbox One X.

2020 will be a big year for the Xbox brand as it hopes to turn things around from this console generation where Sony has dominated. Xbox Game Studios boss Matt Booty said in a new interview with GamesRadar+ that he believes Scarlett has "an advantage" thanks to one feature in particular: backward compatibility.

"We want--when you invest in Xbox--to know that you're bringing that legacy content library with you. It's why we think we've got an advantage with Project Scarlett, because our goal is that any game that runs on an Xbox One will run on Scarlett," Booty said.
In addition to games, Scarlett will work with regular Xbox One controllers and other peripherals you might already own.

Speculation is heating up about Sony’s PS5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Scarlett, the next generation of consoles, as both will be out by this time next year.

This ended up turning into a debate about Xbox Scarlett too, namely based on the interaction of two big industry insiders. First, The Verge’s Tom Warren, in his own thread about the PS5 devkit [...]
Elsewhere, other devs were responding to the Warren comments by saying it would be bizarre if Microsoft was purposefully making life harder for devs by not giving them Scarlett kits just to try and pull a fast one on Sony.

There have been rumblings about which console will end up being more powerful, though this generation is likely to be less about sheer horsepower and more about advancements like enhanced SSDs for heavily reduced load times.
