Disappointing but not surprising. I wish it was surprising! For those with the need there are great "zero knowledge" providers out there. ZK being defined as encrypted on MY device and then sent so that even the providers cannot under any circumstances reveal your email data. The connection IP betrayal is a simple VPN counter measure.

My rule of thumb is generally that I should never put providers in the position of seeing sensitive information. Unless that's an unavoidable aspect of services that they provide. Such as IP addresses and content for VPN providers, Tor entry guards, VPS providers, and so on. And even then, I take measures to limit information that they can see. Mainly through using proxyies and encrypting stuff (messages, connections, disks, etc).
