Microsoft: Cloud gaming is “inevitable” but “years” from mainstream

With the planned 2019 launch of Project Xcloud, Microsoft isn't ignoring the game industry's current mania for streaming gaming. But in a recent interview with Gamespot, Microsoft Xbox head Phil Spencer tempered near-term expectations for the supposed streaming gaming "revolution" some are expecting.

On the one hand, Spencer told the site that streaming is "one of the directions the industry is headed" and will be "inevitably... part of gaming." At the same time, though, Spencer said he doesn't want to oversell the speed of that transition.

Microsoft will test xCloud gaming over 5G in Korea

Microsoft is partnering up with SK Telecom to deliver its xCloud game streaming service over 5G in South Korea. The software giant is planning to start public previews of Project xCloud next month, and SK Telecom is now an “exclusive operating partner” of Microsoft’s cloud gaming service in Korea.
Some SK Telecom customers will be able to try out xCloud game streaming next month, over both LTE and 5G networks.

Either way, Microsoft’s partnership here is interesting and it could hint at further carrier exclusives for xCloud in the future. Microsoft is looking to optimize its datacenters, networks, and overall service across a variety of networks, and by partnering with specific carriers it will be able to do that more closely while carriers get yet another way to entice customers from rivals.

Microsoft is moving Project xCloud into its next phase. The game-streaming technology will open up to a public test in the United States, United Kingdom, and South Korea in October. This is an important step in Microsoft’s efforts to launch game streaming as a product at some point in the future.

roject xCloud’s public preview will include a handful of Xbox games for testing. Using a phone or tablet, you can stream Halo 5: Guardians, Gears 5, Killer Instinct, or Sea of Thieves. The technology to provide virtually lag-free, high-end graphics over miles of cables and Wi-Fi networks has only recently become robust enough. Thus, it comes as no surprise that Microsoft on Tuesday announced the public preview of its own remote gaming service xCloud, available starting next month.

To partake in the preview, you'll need a phone or tablet running Android 6 Marshmallow or higher with Bluetooth 4.0, a Microsoft account, and an Xbox One controller. You should at least have 10Mbit/s downstream, and the company recommends a 5GHz connection should you use the service on Wi-Fi. Access to games is provided via a new Game Streaming app.

So far, the company says the service is free to test and hasn't announced pricing. Microsoft even says that it "will be a multi-year journey to deliver this technology," so you can expect the company to open up the preview to more people and countries before releasing a stable version.

Microsoft is starting to invite players to test out its Project xCloud game streaming service. It said last month it would open up a public preview of the platform in October, allowing players to stream games to their Android devices. Now, it's starting to send out invitations to those eager to try it, with Halo 5: Guardians, Gears 5, Killer Instinct and Sea of Thieves available to play.

When Microsoft announced the public preview, it said players in the US, UK and South Korea would be able to try it out. It's gradually opening up access to people who signed up for the trial, Xbox chief Phil Spencer said, so don't be too alarmed if you don't receive an invitation right away. It's worth noting the preview doesn't allow you to stream games from your own Xbox to Android -- the trial is currently for cloud-based gaming.

According to Microsoft, Project xCloud preview participants in Korea are on average spending 1.75 times more time gaming and revisiting three times more compared to the participants in the United States and United Kingdom.

Samsung is working with Xbox on a "premium cloud-based game streaming experience" and it could be a new avenue for Project xCloud.

CNET reports that Samsung director of strategy David Park mentioned the aforementioned cloud-based collaboration between his company and Xbox during the presentation. He said more would be revealed in the future and left off the details there.
Though he didn't identify it by name, that sounds a lot like a reference to Microsoft's Project xCloud.

"We believe players around the world should have access to great, high-quality games on the device of their choice," a Microsoft spokesperson said. "Working with partners like Samsung is an important step in our Project xCloud journey and will help make game streaming more accessible for gamers. We look forward to sharing more later this year."

Project xCloud expands to iOS with limited test starting today, only 10,000 spots open for now

While Project xCloud has been in public testing since last year, it's only been available on Android devices. That changes today, as a new blog post has just announced that Project xCloud is coming to iOS in the form of a limited test! This test will be restricted to the U.S, UK and Canada at first, while only 10,000 applicants are being accepted at this time.

Due to App Store policies, the only game in this limited test is Halo: The Master Chief Collection. As time goes on and the test expands to more people and regions on iOS, more games may be added. For the full list of games currently supported on Project xCloud via Android, check here.

Last week and without warning, Samsung announced a partnership with Xbox, extending the love affair between the South Korean tech giant and Microsoft.
So, given what we know about Microsoft's aspirations for Xbox, and Microsoft's partnership with Samsung thus far on things like the "Your Phone" app, it's not hard to speculate where this could be going — or why it could become a big deal for Xbox.

Samsung is an absolute giant when it comes to tech, and you don't need me to tell you.
If Samsung and Microsoft were to say, cut a deal to have XCloud pre-installed not only on Galaxy handsets and tablets, but also Samsung QLED smart TVs, it could bring millions into the Xbox platform very quickly.

Microsoft has already announced that it sees South Korean usage of XCloud to be almost double that of a Western gamer during the preview tests, indicating XCloud could finally help the Xbox development platform get a serious foothold in markets where it has largely been absent.

The preview has expanded significantly as far as the amount of users that can play, and the number of games offered. In fact, there are now more than 50 games on the xCloud preview.
Today, the company announced that it's adding trailers to the app. Upon launching the service, you'll get trailers for five games that you can swipe through.

Naturally, this feature is only available on Android. The reason for this is because Project xCloud on iOS still only has one game [...] it surely wouldn't make sense to include trailers for five games in an app where only one game is available.

As you watch the trailer, the game will load in the background and if a particular game catches your eye, you can jump in and play or keep searching for something else.

Project xCloud, which has continued to grow and evolve since preview started last year, is our game-streaming technology allowing players to play console games from the cloud on an Android phone or tablet. As we promised at X019 in November, we’ve had our sights set on expanding the Project xCloud preview this year to more countries.
With that in mind, we continue to evaluate the COVID-19 situation and will begin rolling out the Project xCloud preview across 11 Western European countries when we are confident it is sensible to do so.
