Microsoft overtakes Facebook as the #1 spoofed brand

Phisherfolk love to try to trick people into thinking they are a major brand in order to get them to reveal passwords or personal data.

New research from Vade Secure reveals that in the second quarter of this year Microsoft has supplanted Facebook as the most spoofed brand. The social network drops two places to third, behind perennial phishing favorite PayPal.

Although Microsoft remains the top target for phishers, Netflix saw an incredible surge in Dec., making it the second most impersonated brand in Q4 2018, according to Vade Secure.

Hackers impersonate Microsoft more than any other brand in phishing attacks

Cybercriminals change tactics throughout the week when waging phishing attacks, as social media services like Facebook are targeted more during the weekend, according to the Q1 2019 Phishers' Favorites report published Thursday by Vade Secure.

After three quarters of decline, Facebook-targeted phishing campaigns increased 155.5% in Q1, making it the fourth most-impersonated brand, jumping three places from the previous report.
Despite a 4.5% decrease in phishing attempts, Microsoft is still #1, while PayPal and Netflix swapped positions over the last quarter.

"Given the focus on Office 365 - versus Microsoft's consumer products and services - hackers are clearly trying to take advantage of professionals being in the office and active on email during the week to increase their odds of success," the report noted.

Microsoft is still the brand most spoofed by cyber criminals attempting to conduct phishing attacks – but fraudsters are increasingly sending phony emails claiming to be the likes of Facebook and Amazon to steal login credentials, financial data and other information from victims.
Microsoft accounts are an obvious target for hackers given the number of users who have Outlook Hotmail or Office 365 accounts.

Attacks spoofing Microsoft often claim that there's a problem with the user's account and that they need to login via a link to solve the issue. This link leads to a spoofed of the Microsoft Office 365 page which captures the email addresses and passwords entered, handing them to the attacker.
Meanwhile, fake URLs targeting Facebook accounts have grown by 176% in just a year, meaning that impersonating the social network is now the third most popular avenue of attack for phishing.

PayPal has knocked Microsoft off the top spot to become the brand most imitated in phishing attacks.
The payment facilitator was accorded this dubious honor today with the publication of Vade Secure's Phishers' Favorites report for Q3 2019.

Researchers analyzed data from more than 600 million protected mailboxes worldwide to determine which organizations email scammers deign to pose as most frequently. The resulting report lists the 25 most aped organizations.

"You can no longer identify phishing based on poor design, typos, or bad grammar; they’re well designed and well written," Adrien Gendre, Vade Secure’s chief solutions architect, told Infosecurity Magazine.
