Microsoft makes Visual Studio 2022 and .NET 6 generally available
It's a big week for developers using Microsoft's Visual Studio and .NET platforms.

On November 8, Microsoft made generally available to users worldwide its latest versions of Visual Studio and .NET. Users can download Visual Studio 2022 and .NET 6 starting today.

Visual Studio 2022 is the first release of a 64-bit version of Visual Studio. By making Visual Studio 64-bit, officials said that they expect the release to better use all system resources, especially when working with more complex solutions over longer periods. According to Microsoft, during early VS 2022 testing, customers were able to run the VS IDE for days, even with solutions containing 700 or more projects.

Visual Studio 2022 also includes a number of edits and debug improvements. It also provides Hot Reload, which allows developers to edit their source code while their apps are running in Visual Studio 2022 and from the .NET CLI. , It also has Live Preview capabilities and cross-platform testing on Linux, among other new and improved features. .NET 6 is available for Windows, Linux and macOS. It provides a unified platform across cloud, desktop, IoT and mobile apps by using the same .NET libraries and the ability to share code across platforms easily, officials said. This release has performance improvements, especially around file I/O.

This is the first .NET release that natively supports Apple Arm64 Silicon and supports Windows Arm64, as well. This release includes rebuilt ahead-of-time compiler tools and many new APIs. The .NET 6 release includes C# 10 and F# 6. The .NET 6 release is a Long-Term Support (LTS) version of .NET, meaning it will be supported for three years.

Visual Studio 2022 17.1 is now generally available

A few weeks ago, Visual Studio 2022 17.1 Preview 2 became available for those who want to test the integrated development environment (IDE) early. Today, this version of the software has hit general availability (GA) and is ready for everyone to try out.

Most of the features that were available in preview over a month ago have made it over to the GA version and Microsoft has also incorporated feedback gathered from end-users.

Indexed Find in Files is now enabled by default which results in a faster searching experience. If, for whatever reason, you want to disable this capability, you can navigate to Tools > Options > Environment > Preview Features and uncheck "Enable indexing for faster find experience".

You can also enable a new feature that attempts to save every "dirty" document in the IDE such as project and solution each time your IDE window loses focus. Furthermore, there are some Git enhancements in tow too, such as the ability to compare branches, checkout a commit, review pull requests, and a lot more.

Microsoft has released Visual Studio 2022 17.3. This update brings support for .NET Multi-platform App UI (.NET MAUI), the ability to develop apps for Microsoft Teams, C++ improvements, Azure Container Apps, and improved Live Unit Testing. You can see a complete list of new features by opening Help > What’s New in Visual Studio.

The headline feature in this update is that .NET MAUI has graduated from preview support and is now available in the release channel of Visual Studio 2022 on Windows. The support includes productivity features that will help you quickly build and ship .NET client apps to Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows from a single codebase. Hot Reload, Live Visual Tree, and XAML Live Preview are some of the tools that can make you more productive.

Microsoft and Canonical bring native .NET 6 to Linux starting with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

There is some big news coming today for .NET developers who were keen to work on Linux. That's because Microsoft and Canonical have announced that they are bringing native .NET 6 support to Linux on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS to both hosts and containers. For now, they are coming to x64 only, but Arm64 is next in line.

The installation will work using a simple apt install command for .NET 6 that will download the necessary packages. In a blog post, Canonical explains how it will work:

.NET 6 users and developers can now install the .NET 6 packages on Ubuntu with a simple apt install dotnet6 command. Optimised, pre-built, ultra-small container images are also now available to use out of the box.

Overall, the companies are promising a hassle-free installation, timely security patches and updates, smaller Open Container Initiative (OCI)-compliant containers, and more. For example, the Chiseled Ubuntu image here is going to be 100MB smaller than they are typically known for.

Microsoft: .NET 6 is now in Ubuntu 22.04

.NET 6 is now included in Ubuntu 22.04 (Jammy) and can be installed with just apt install dotnet6. This change is a major improvement and simplification for Ubuntu users. We’re also releasing .NET with Chiseled Ubuntu Containers, a new small and secure container offering from Canonical. These improvements are the result of a new partnership between Canonical and Microsoft.

Visual Studio 2022 17.4 lets you roll back to a previous version

Microsoft has revealed that Visual Studio 2022 17.4, which came out earlier this week, allows you to roll back to an old version if you’re encountering any issues. This update has been requested since November 2018 and has 438 upvotes in Microsoft’s Developer Community, now the feature is available.

If you’re on the Release channel, you can roll back to your previously installed version if it was either 17.0.10 or higher, or 17.1.7 or higher. If you’re on the Preview channel, you can roll back to 17.2 Preview 1 or higher. You should note that any security updates you’ve installed will be removed as part of this process, so think carefully about whether you really need to roll back. Microsoft always recommends updating back to the latest version to stay secure.
