Microsoft Loop leaked a few days ago, leading many to believe that Microsoft is working on a new workspace app. Today, at its Ignite 2021 conference, the company made this official by announcing Loop as a new Microsoft 365 app that also offers portable components that can be used with other services such as Teams, Outlook, and OneNote. However, this integration will be rolled out in preview over the next few months.

Loop is built on the Fluid Framework open-source platform and features three essential elements: components, pages, and workspaces.

Loop components are the smaller building blocks of a workflow such as lists and tables that stay in sync with other Microsoft 365 apps. Other examples of components include a voting table for decision-making and a status tracker to measure progress. Loop pages are canvases where you organize Loop Components, and finally, Loop workspaces are shared spaces where you group all your ideas for a project.

Microsoft plans to roll out more components with the passage of time whereas the aforementioned components will be available soon across other Microsoft 365 apps. More information will be revealed at next year's Build conference, but in the meantime, you can find out more information here.

Microsoft launches Google Wave

Microsoft is bringing back Google Wave, the doomed real-time messaging and collaboration platform Google launched in 2009 and prematurely shuttered in 2010.

Last year, the company open-sourced Fluid and started building it into a few of its own Office applications. Today, at its Ignite conference, it’s launching a whole new product built on top of Fluid: Microsoft Wave Loop.
Loop is a new app — and concept — that takes the Fluid framework, which provides developers with flexible components to mix and match in order to create real-time editing-based applications, to create a new experience for users to collaborate on documents.

In many ways, that was also the promise of Google Wave — real-time collaboration plus a developer framework and protocol to bring Wave everywhere.

There are three elements to Loop: Loop components, “atomic units of productivity” (tip of my hat to whoever came up with that phrase) like lists, tables, notes and tasks; Loop pages, “flexible canvases where you can organize your components and pull in other useful elements like files, links, or data to help teams think, connect, and collaborate;” and Loop workspaces, shared spaces where you somehow can catch up on what everybody is working on and track progress toward shared goals.

Some new Loop/Fluent components coming soon are a voting table (a day-one feature of Google Wave, I might add) and a status tracker.

Microsoft Loop homepage and signup page leaks, but you can't quite use it just yet

icrosoft announced a new Microsoft Loop experience back in November of 2021, and it was intended as a new collaborative app to leverage Microsoft's own Fluid Framework and let you manage various Loop snips. Microsoft has been quiet about Loop since then, but the leaker FireCube recently revealed what looks to be a homepage and signup page for the new Microsoft experience.

Unfortunately, it looks as though this signup page to try out the new Loop app isn't working, as only says the public preview hasn't started yet. Still, the signup page is pretty neat, as it showcases how the Loop experience might look. Naturally, it's heavily influenced by Fluent Design with a lot of mica effects and rounded corners. The webpage also dives into the following features of Loop.
