Microsoft Launches MSIX Installer Format Supporting Both Win32 and UWP
The new app packaging format is open source

Essentially, MSIX can replace both APPX (previously used for Microsoft Store apps) and MSI (which was launched for Win32 packaging) and brings more container security options with application customization.

Format already open sourced
The new MSIX format is open source and Microsoft has already published the SDK on GitHub, offering cross-platform API support for unpacking packages.

I suppose the most important aspect here is the fact that Microsoft has open-sourced the specifications. They've been doing this more and more over the past few years which is good to see.

Microsoft releases MSIX Packaging Tool into Preview via the Microsoft Store

Now, Microsoft has released a preview version of its MSIX Packaging Tool on the Microsoft Store if you've been wanting to try your hand at converting apps into the new MSIX format without using the full SDK. In order to download it though, you'll need to be logged into the Microsoft Store app with a Microsoft Account enrolled in the Windows Insider Program. Of course, if you are clicking on this download on a machine already enrolled into the program then you should already be signed into the store.

However, there are a number of prerequisites, which include:

Participation in Windows Insider fast or slow rings

Minimum Windows 10 Build 17701 or later

Administrator privileges on your PC account

A valid MSA alias (to access the app from the Store)

I freaking hate the Windows Installer MSI format! All file installers should have the .exe extension.

MSIX is a package, and if you change the filename to a ZIP file, you can see everything that's inside of it. These packages will be supported beginning with the Windows 10 October 2018 Update.

But one thing that's going to be added is support for older versions of Windows, like Windows 7 and 8.1 (first announced at Build). The team did say that support for older versions of Windows 10 is a possibility, with support being extended for businesses.

Also on the list is forced updates. Right now, you can actually continue using the app while it's updating. Developers will soon have the option to set it so that the user will be prompted to update before opening the app.

Also on the roadmap are richer OS extensibility, deeper integration with System Center ConfigMgr and Intune, and flexible containers. Microsoft also wants to grow the Package Support Framework library. The whole idea is to make MSIX more robust.

Microsoft MSIX Packaging Tool for Windows apps gets major update with bunch of new features

Microsoft today has released an update to its MSIX Packaging Tool. The MSIX Packaging Tool enables users and IT admins to repackage existing applications to the MSIX format without the need for source code, hence making the transition a lot easier. It offers both an interactive UI and a command line for conversions.

With this latest version, the company has added a whole bunch of new features. These include support for portable apps, child process monitoring to help increase the accuracy of the conversion processes, the ability to exclude Windows services using the "Service Exclusion" tab, improvements to Package Support Framework (PSF), and finally Package Editor enhancements.
