Microsoft hit the trillion-dollar value mark on Thursday for the first time, becoming the third technology giant to reach the symbolic milestone.

At its current levels, Microsoft is the world’s most valuable company, ahead of Apple and Amazon, which last year topped $1 trillion before slipping back.
On Wednesday, Microsoft said profits in the quarter to March 31 rose 19 per cent to $US8.8 billion ($A12.56 billion) on revenues of $US30.8 billion ($A43.94 billion), an increase of 14 per cent from the same period a year earlier.

The results were driven by growth in cloud computing and business services, the new focus for Microsoft after a long run as a leader in consumer software.

Surface, Windows, and Xbox help drive Microsoft to strong Q3 earnings

Microsoft posted the third quarter of its 2019 financial results today, reporting revenue of $30.6 billion and net income of $8.8 billion. Revenue has jumped 14 percent year over year and net income has increased 19 percent. Cloud and Office continue to push Microsoft’s revenue in the right direction, but Xbox, Surface, and Windows have held their own this quarter to help drive some solid results.

Microsoft might not have launched any new Surface products in the recent quarter, but it’s still a strong quarter for the company’s hardware products after a busy holiday season. Surface revenue grew 21 percent year over year, up to $1.3 billion and likely reflecting demand for a range of Surface hardware.

Office commercial products and cloud services revenue increased 12 percent year over year, and Microsoft now has more than 180 million active monthly Office 365 business users.
Microsoft splits its businesses up into three main buckets, and they’re all roughly contributing the same amount of revenue this quarter (around 30 percent each).

Microsoft is America’s most valuable company—and it isn’t even close. After shares surged Friday (June 7), the software company’s market capitalization is now well above $1 trillion.
A Microsoft rally led its share price to rocket nearly 10% in the past four days to a record level.

(Nadella, for his part, won’t be celebrating the trillion-dollar milestone: in an earlier interview with Bloomberg, he dismissed the valuation as “not meaningful” [...])

Things didn’t look as rosy for the tech behemoth prior to Nadella’s taking over as CEO in Feb. 2014.
Under Nadella’s eye, however, the morale and performance of the company have rebounded. Nadella has notably brought extra focus on cloud computing, with Microsoft’s Azure offering proving a serious competitor to Amazon Web Services.

Microsoft Q4 results are good, but not as good as you might think

Multinational megacorp Microsoft has published its fourth-quarter results and its a mixed bag of news.
The topline figures are $33.7bn revenue and $13.2bn net income - both are massive rises compared to Q4 2018 and set a new fiscal year record for the company.
This is also the first set of results that sees Microsoft retaining its trillion-dollar value, achieved earlier in the year.

Surface revenue is up 14 per cent, despite there being no new models being released in the quarter.
Surprisingly, the gaming division had a rough quarter, down 10 per cent, with Xbox dropping three per cent. [...] because there's been no new hardware, but a preview of the next version, leading many potential buyers to hold off.

Azure has jumped 64 per cent, but as great as that sounds, it's actually a massive slow-down compared to previous results, and the wider division, including server products, has only jumped 22 per cent, in an increasingly competitive market.

TechCrunch: Azure revenue continues to slow down for Microsoft

The growth rates for FY19 were, Q1: 76%, Q2: 76%, Q3: 73% and all the way down to 64% this quarter.
They’re probably not panicking in the hallways in Redmond today over these numbers, as that is still a healthy growth rate, and the law of large numbers suggests that the bigger you get, the slower your growth is going to be.
