Microsoft Bing and Yandex announce new IndexNow protocol for search engines

Microsoft Bing and Yandex (the most popular search engine in Russia) today announced IndexNow, a new way for websites owners to inform search engines about latest content changes on their website. Instead of waiting for search engines to discover that the content has changed, website owners can now do a simple ping so that search engines know that a URL and its content has been added, updated, or deleted.

With IndexNow, search engines know immediately the “URLs that have changed, helping them prioritize crawl for these URLs and thereby limiting organic crawling to discover new content.”

Also, by notifying one search engine you will notify all search engines that have adopted IndexNow. In the future, if IndexNow is widely adopted, search engines may limit crawling of websites.

Microsoft Bing and Yandex are offering IndexNow under the terms of the Attribution-ShareAlike Creative Commons License.

Appears to be a shot across Google's bow from Microsoft and Yandex.

Bing stops accepting Sitemap pings, switch to IndexNow instead

The Microsoft Bing search engine has quietly stopped accepting XML Sitemap pings over the holiday break. XML Sitemaps are a structured data format that contains a list of a website’s primary pages. Websites can proactively ping search engines when they publish changes to request that the search engine come and index their new pages.

Baidu removed their XML Sitemap Ping API in 2017. The same year, Yandex also removed any mention of their API from their webmaster documentation.

The IndexNow initiative is a new API from Bing and Yandex that launched in November 2021. IndexNow lets any website submit one or more new or changed URLs to all participating search engines with one API call.
IndexNow makes it easier for websites to adopt as it’s just one standard and one API request to submit to multiple search engines in one go.

Bing did not respond to my request for comments. To be fair, it’s the holiday season, so there’s probably no one around. I’ll update this story if I hear back from Bing.

Microsoft releases IndexNow plugin for WordPress websites

Last year, Microsoft Bing and Yandex (the most popular search engine in Russia) announced IndexNow, a new way for websites owners to inform search engines about latest content changes on their website.

Recently, Microsoft released IndexNow Plugin for WordPress. This new plugin will enable automated submission of URLs from WordPress sites to the multiple search engines. After installation, the plugin will detect page creation/update/ deletion in WordPress and automatically submits the URLs in the background.
