Microsoft And Sony Announce Vague Cloud Gaming Partnership

Microsoft said today that it will partner with Sony, its chief rival in the gaming console space, on “new cloud-based solutions for gaming experiences.” It’s unclear what exactly the new collaboration will ultimately lead to, but the move is still a surprising one given that the companies’ Xbox and PlayStation console lines are market competitors.

“In addition, the two companies will explore the use of current Microsoft Azure datacenter-based solutions for Sony’s game and content-streaming services.”
The move comes hot on the heels of Google’s entrance into the game console market with its cloud-only platform Stadia. The move could be prompted by the console business’ entrenched players looking to team up to better defend themselves against Google.

The language of the announcement is vague, and a memorandum of understanding isn’t necessarily legally binding. While it’s a statement of intent, it might not end up leading to anything significant.

Realizing that his home-grown cloud service isn’t going to cut it, Sony Chief Executive Officer Kenichiro Yoshida is being forced to collaborate, rather than confront his old gaming nemesis.

Over the long-term, some are warning Sony could be the loser. Currently it charges publishers like Electronic Arts Inc. and Capcom Co. up to 30% of sales made through PlayStation consoles. But if streaming takes off, it will have to compete against Microsoft while paying its rival for cloud access.
That could leave Sony struggling to stand out both on technical and pricing terms.

It’s also unclear how antitrust regulators will respond to two of the three players in the console market teaming up to develop a key technology, especially as it involves the world’s largest company by market value.

Microsoft snags another unique strategic collaboration with a seemingly competitive gaming business partner in SEGA.

Announced a little bit ago, Microsoft and SEGA will be exploring a "strategic alliance to create new strategic titles for SEGA and establish a next-generation development environment," between the two.
Looking beyond the corporate aerosol use of the word strategic, the nitty gritty of today's announcement is less about adding SEGA titles to Windows Store of Xbox catalogue and more about placing SEGA's business on Azure.

Similar to the agreement Microsoft struck with Sony two years ago, SEGA will tie its mid to long-term development strategies to Azure as they move their global gaming efforts to Azure's cloud platform.

More specifically, SEGA points to the cloud migration as a way for the company to continue to innovate titles that can better leverage "online", "community", and "IP utilization."

Despite both Microsoft CVP Sarah Bond and SEGA president and COO Yukio Sugino commenting on today's news, there are still few details made public about the partnership such as yearly commitments, opt-out clauses, total amount and if this migration includes other Microsoft software tie-ins such as Office 365 and or use of Windows for the multinational Japanese-based company.
