    Re: my love/hate relationship w/ msmsgs.exe

My problem is the Messenge Plus! 2
I have tried to uninstall it via Add/Remove in the control
panel but it gives me this error message:

"Messenger Plus has NOT been uninstalled from your computer.
    Please try again later."

Start/Programs does not show that Messenger Plus is even
installed, however, windows explorer does reveal it being in a folder
    inside the Programs folder.

I tried to do the uninstall via Safe Mode and got the same error
    message.

Yesterday, I uninstalled MSN messenger and was left with the remains
of msmsgs in start up, even though I had it disabled in
the registry and start up folder so I then ran the instructions:

    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

This did get rid of msmsgs but did it effect the ability
    to uninstall Messenger Plus?

I am wondering if this is why I now cannot uninstall Messenger Plus! 2

I've also used the Ad-aware Add On utitily to disable Messenger Plus! 2
but I would like to uninstall it and have it permanently gone. I have
never used it, will never use it, and don't know how it even got onto
my computer since I never downloaded it. No one used my computer but me so
I wonder if it arrived via a Windows update or something? Anyway, your help
to uninstall this thing would be much appreciated.

    :doubt:

Hi BunnyGirl, I have split your post into this new thread as it was not a PortExplorer support issue and will receive better attention here. :)

    Thanks. Pilli

I downloaded the uninstaller from lop.com but Norton
flagged it as unsafe so I let Norton delete it.

From within Windows Explorer,I opened up the folder
    containing Messenger Plus2 and saw
2 dll files in there. One was named MsgPlusH.dll
and the other RichEdHock.dll. I ran a system search to see if these
dll files existed inside windows or anywhere else on my system,
but nothing came up. Because The Start/Program showed no listing
for Messenger 2, I decided to manually empty the folder and sent
the folder contents and then the folder to the recycle bin. I
    also emptied the recycle bin!

I Rebooted my computer, ran the registry cleaner, junk file
    cleanup, Norton anti-virus, Ad-aware, Spybot, & got a clean
    bill of health.
I rebooted my computer and everything seems to be running fine,
    no error messages.
I opened the Add/Remove program and tried uninstalling Messenger
    again.
This time, I got a message saying it was not to be found
anywhere on my system and then it asked if I wanted it
removed from the Add/Remove Program listing?
    I clicked yes.

I know this is an unorthodoxed way of removal and really shouldn't be
done, but I couldn't find any reference to it anywhere on my computer
except for the folder it resided in so I took a chance. Even though
it appeared in the Add/Remove program listing, it seemed like it
had never been installed ....never used, never showed up in
the system tray, no listing of it in the start/program menu.
Every system search I did for references of it came up empty. It's been a week and things seem to be running fine...so far.

The thought of re-installing a newer version of Messenger
and then trying to uninstall it gave me goose bumps as I
wondered what type of problems that might create.

Things seem to running fine so far, and messenger is gone, gone, gone.
I'll post again if something else appears as a result of my actions.........

:) Thanks so much everyone for your input and informative links. I really appreciate it. Since I last posted, I installed and ran, SpyBlaster, CWShredder and posted my Hijack This log, ran adaware, and Norton anti-virus and they all gave me a clean bill of health. I also ran the Panda remote anti-virus scan, and also received a clean bill of health from them. Things are running fine now, and there doesn't seem to be any remnants of Messenger Plus left.

One thing though...when I submitted my Hijack This log, it did flag the PowerRegSchedulerV2.exe in my start up folder. I have since fixed that and it is gone too.

I could not have done any of this without the knowledge that you all freely share in these forums. I thank you all so very much. :)
