The Meizu Zero is a new phone without a traditional speaker or physical buttons. Meizu says that it's the "world's first holeless phone", using technologies like in-screen sound, pressure-sensing, and wireless charging to offer a seamless design that's also IP68 water and dust resistant.

When it comes to buttons, the company says that it's got a "Virtual Side Button" that lets you power the Zero on and off as well as adjust the volume. This "button" uses a haptic engine to give you the feeling and tactile feedback of a physical button, but without the moving parts.

Also helping the Meizo Zero be a totally holeless phone is Super mCharge Wireless tech that offers wireless charging up to 18W. Meizu is also including a dedicated charging base to ensure that you can charge your Zero. The phone uses wireless USB 3.0 for transferring data, and since it doesn't have a SIM card slot, it uses eSIM.

Meizu is opting to sell its latest smartphone through crowdfunding platform IndieGoGo. Backing the phone will cost you $1,299, and Meizu only seems to be selling 100 of them for now. Well, technically 101, but that last device is a $2,999 "Exclusive Pioneering Unit" which has already been claimed.

Concerning the Zero's hardware, Meizu is remaining tight-lipped for now. All we know is that it will ship with a Snapdragon 845 processor, meaning things like memory or storage capacity options are still up in the air.
If you want to back the Zero, you can do so via its official IndieGoGo page. Meizu anticipates that the smartphone will launch sometime in April 2019.

Despite the existence of working units, there's no word on the Zero's future at this moment, but in response to a related thread on Meizu's official forum, founder and CEO Jack Wong gave a surprisingly upfront -- if not a little disheartening -- one-liner.

"This crowdfunding project was just the marketing team messing about," Wong said, "the holeless phone is just a development project from the R&D department, we never intended to mass-produce this project."
Wong's seemingly laid-back attitude also reinforces the observation that large companies have been abusing crowdfunding platforms just to get some buzz, rather than genuinely seeking financial support from backers.
