Apple’s first Augmented Reality (AR)-based product could go into mass production by the second quarter of 2020, famed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes.

“The analyst says that the AR glasses will essentially act as a display only with the actual computing, rendering, internet connectivity and location services coming from the iPhone in the user’s pocket. It is assumed that the pairing will work wirelessly,” 9To5Mac reported on Friday.

The patent suggests that the headset would wirelessly communicate with a separate device powered by a custom Apple processing brain. The company also wishes to add a “touch-sensitive surface” as a way to interact with that environment.
“Apple is clearly betting big on it being a hit. If manufacturing is indeed ramping up at the end of 2019, a 2020 public product launch is seemingly on the cards,” the report added.

In an internal development build of iOS 13, folks at MacRumors has spotted a new app called STARTester, and a Readme file.
The app can be used to switch in and out of a head-mounted mode to “replicate the functionality of an augmented reality headset on an iPhone for testing purposes.” The head-mounted test includes two modes — “worn” and “held.”

The Readme file also hints at the ongoing development of the product. It talks about a “Starboard” system shell, which is developed for Stereo apps. The Readme file also suggests that Apple is currently in the process of making an AR device codenamed ‘Garta.’
There is no official word on the release date of Apple’s AR glass, but now that we’ve gotten this far, it’s pretty much safe to say that we will see it by the end of 2020.

A slew of features and language discovered recently inside iOS 13 and 13.1 seem to explicitly confirm the very thing Apple executives have steadfastly refused to acknowledge—an honest-to-Jobs AR headset.

First came StarBoard. At the very beginning of September, a leaked internal build of iOS 13 was found to contain a "readme" file referring to StarBoard, a system that allows developers to view stereo-enabled AR apps on an iPhone.
Not long after, on the day of the hardware event, Apple released Xcode 11, the newest version of the company's macOS development environment. Inside that set of tools lurked data files for what appeared to be two different headsets, codenamed Franc and Luck.

Kuang points to another recent Apple patent, published just last week, proposing an AR display that delivers three-dimensional imagery through an Akonia-like waveguide system. In his view, it confirms the company's commitment to getting past the limitations of today's devices—particularly the eyestrain that results from trying to focus on virtual objects and real-world ones at the same time.

"The fact that Apple is acknowledging it's a big problem and intends to fix it is huge," he says. "It's more than Microsoft can be said to be doing."

The drum beat for an Apple augmented reality headset is growing louder. Bloomberg claims Apple has "targeted" a 2020 release for its AR eyewear, echoing analyst Ming-Chi Kuo's expectations based on his own sources.
The publication also shares a belief that the headset will sync with your iPhone to deliver messages, maps and games to your eyes. Apple has also "considered" implementing an App Store, according to the report.

Apple has been making strategic hires to bolster its AR team, but the company reportedly has yet to devise an app that would make the hardware a "must-buy." You might see a later release if higher-ups decide the product needs more work.

On Friday, Bloomberg reported that Apple made another significant move of appointing new vice presidents, suggesting that it is giving attention to its wearables like the AR Glasses. While the promotion of new executives is standard, the critical change is in the appointment of vice president for hardware engineering, particularly that of Paul Meade. The new VP has headed Apple’s hardware development of augmented reality headset in the past, triggering more speculations.

Earlier reports suggest that the Apple AR Glasses might become available in mid-2020 along with 5G iPhones.
If that is the timeline, it is possible that the Apple AR Glasses could be well on its way to the design pipeline. Apple has reportedly roped in Valve to help it develop its long-rumoured augmented reality (AR) headset.

So says Digitimes, so as usual, we'd advise taking this with a fistful of salt. It reports that Apple "has partnered with US game developer Valve to develop AR head-mounted display devices," which it claims "may be released in the second half of 2020 at the earliest."
It's unclear exactly why Apple is joining forces with Valve - if indeed it is - though Valve does have some experience in the VR and HMD spaces;

This newly-formed partnership, however, will be focused on AR rather than VR, Digitimes reports, as "Tim Cook believes that AR can make digital content become part of the user's world and will be as popular as smartphones with consumers.

"This has also promoted Apple to step up the development of AR software by recruiting more engineers for graphic design, system interface and system architecture segments," the report notes.

You might not want to get your hopes up for an Apple augmented reality headset in 2020 despite evidence of progress. The Information sources claim Apple held an internal presentation in October where it expected to release the AR headset (really a mixed AR/VR headset) in 2022, and AR glasses in 2023.

The glasses, meanwhile, aren't as well-defined. Existing prototypes reportedly resemble "high-priced sunglasses" that have "thick frames" to house the processors and battery.
The company is apparently confident in the technology, at least. Senior managers supposedly told employees that later versions of the glasses could obviate the need for iPhones in "roughly a decade," an Information source said.

Apple has unsurprisingly declined to comment, and it's important to stress that a lot can happen in the space of two-plus years.

A new DigiTimes report claims that Apple could launch its AR glasses by 2022. The report states that Taiwan-based optical component suppliers are already working on developing Apple’s smart glasses.

What is unclear is when Apple plans on launching this AR headset and what all features it will offer.
A report from The Information last year had claimed that Apple executives discussed the launch time frame of the AR headset and glasses, with a potential 2022 launch on the cards. This would then be followed by the release of a sleeker AR glasses in 2023. As for the headset, it would look similar to the Oculus Quest.

Yesterday, reputable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that the Apple Glasses will launch in 2022 at the earliest, so it is possible that Apple unveils the glasses in 2021 and releases them in 2022. This would be consistent with the original Apple Watch, which was previewed in September 2014 and launched in April 2015. Apple also introduced the HomePod in June 2017 and launched the speaker in February 2018.

When Jon Prosser dropped his leak-bomb back in May, giving away almost everything about Apple's in-development AR glasses, he mentioned in passing that the projected price (a surprisingly low $499) did not include your glasses lens prescription. You'll have to pay for that on top of the standard price.

But we think the prescription upcharge isn't going anywhere. Apple tends not to overreach on first-gen products in any case, because it likes to have something it can 'fix' on version two.
What that fix could be in this case may have been revealed by patent activity, spotted by AppleInsider. A patent granted yesterday - number 10,686,922 - explores the idea of a headset that can adjust its output via lenses to accommodate a user's prescription.

So some theoretical future iteration of Apple Glass could adjust itself automatically to your prescription, like those big machines that opticians have.

While he was still at Apple, designer Jony Ive objected to plans for what would become Apple Glass, starting internal disagreements that would delay the whole venture.

Apple was reportedly many years into developing an augmented- and virtual reality headset when Jony Ive objected to its design. The then Chief Design Officer seemingly disliked how the project was then heading to be a set of AR/VR glasses paired to a separate hub device.
According to Bloomberg, Ive preferred an alternative design that put solely AR into single pair of glasses. He felt that the design would be better, but also reportedly objected to the idea of an Oculus-style experience where users were cut off from reality.

Aside from arguments over what users would see and not see when wearing a headset, Rockwell's position was that having a separate hub would give the product far faster graphics and more powerful VR features.

Their preference was for a design codenamed N301, which was to be a full gaming and virtual reality system in a hub, with linked headset. The other option, N421, appears to be what has become the Apple Glass device.

While Apple has gone for a less-powerful option than Rockwell wanted, its forthcoming Apple Glass product is still expected to be a hit because of what analysts call Apple's "design advantage."

Apple’s prospective plans for a “modular system for head-mounted device” were revealed in a newly-public patent posted to the USPTO. The United States Patent and Trademark Office showed this document with inventors Paul X Wang and Dinesh C Mathew, as first filed in April of the year 2019.

The modular system for head-mounted device via Apple Insider appears as a modular system with customizable components. This head-mounted device (glasses) would have “one or more arm modules to provide features that integrate with other operations of the frame module of the head-mounted device.”

“The arm modules can be easily exchanged with each other to provide different components and functions at different times,” said the patent abstract. “[...] Instead, the head-mounted device can have expanded and customizable capabilities by the use of one or more arm modules.”

That could be neat, but it doesn’t seem to follow Apple’s history of devices with very few easy-to-find weak points in their hardware. But if Apple does make a pair of glasses, in any form, there might be the requirement to make something that’s actually, inherently, quite fragile. We shall see!

Apple has reportedly entered trial production with Foxconn for the manufacture of lenses that are expected to be used in "Apple Glass." The lenses are critical to the use of augmented reality and ARkit, in how they will present computer-generated images to the wearer, alongside what that user can see of the real world.

Reportedly, the trial lenses are semi-transparent and polarized ones, made from multiple and extremely thin layers of various materials. The lenses have to be made in dust-free clean rooms and, according to The Information's unnamed sources, are slightly larger than ones typically found in spectacles.

We have been getting rumors concerning the new Apple Glasses for quite a while.
The guys over at Appleinsider have found an interesting patent application from Apple. We can see that one of the features in the Apple Glasses would be able to make any surface into a virtual touch interface. Further, a person using these Glasses would be able to interact with the mixed virtual/real environment that they are looking at.

This could be made possible with the help of an iPad or iPhone as an AR viewfinder, where the user would be able to interact with the AR environment while using a glove or finger sensors. However, finger to surface contact would be possible through infrared heat sensing.

We reported in July that Apple may be planning to launch iPhone-tethered AR glasses this year, but as we approach the end of the year this rumour appears to have evaporated.

Now we are hearing the opposite from analyst Ross Young from Display Search.

I should clarify that this is AR only. It will use projection optics inside the glasses.
