How likely is it that malware activities will appear in "Windows Task Manager" under "Processes"?

You mean "recognizable as malware" or would you like to know which percentage of malware nowadays has rootkit abilities and is able to hide itself?

Because IMHO there are two obvious reasons why a "malware activity" would not show up in Taskmanager:
    • rootkit
    • injected in another process (for example a BHO in iexplore)

There are other reasons why you wouldn't notice a malware process in Taskmanager (at least not as first sight), but I'm guessing that's not what you mean.

    Regards,

    Pieter

Yeah, I've wondered about this as well. I have on average about 44-47 processes running. I've wondered if this is way too many. Most of the time I usually have only FF 2 , Spybot SD , SpywareBlaster, ZAfree running. AVG I don't believe runs in the background.

If you don't know what a process is or it look suspicious, you can google it.
Or go directly to processlibrary.com and search for the process.
