Maids rule in Japan's nerd nirvana

    Monday, February 6, 2006; Posted: 8:28 p.m. EST (01:28 GMT)

Maid themes are proving a huge success among Tokyo's "otaku".

TOKYO, Japan (Reuters) -- "Welcome home, Master," says the maid as she bows deeply, hands clasped in front of a starched pinafore worn over a short pink dress.

This maid serves not some aristocrat but a string of pop-culture-mad customers at a "Maid Cafe" in Tokyo's Akihabara district, long known as a Mecca for electronics buffs but now also the center of the capital's "nerd culture".

"When they address you as 'Master', the feeling you get is like a high," says Koji Abei, a 20-year-old student having coffee with a friend at the Royal Milk Cafe and Aromacare.

"I've never felt that way before."

At one cafe, maids get down on their knees to stir the cream and sugar into the customer's coffee.

At Royal Milk, diners can follow up a meal with a range of grooming services, including ear cleanings.

Maids at some of the more attentive shops even offer to spoon-feed customers at their table.

hmm... i wonder how this service would go over in North America. :cautious:

    Any comments ladies? ;) :D

    Sure! :)

I think anybody that "needs" to be fed by hand for entertainment, by another person...and even pays for it ...needs to get a life!

I just wonder if the enjoyment is all one way. It could be that the women enjoy acting out their parts in this fantasy. Possibly there are women who find the modern feminist roll is even more distasteful to them, and yet a fact of life. Maybe some women have wanted to see what it would be like to be at the other end of the spectrum. They might find it amusing or satisfying, or even fulfilling. Or perhaps they just need a job, and that's the best one they can find.

In any case, the men seem to enjoy themselves, and the women are there by there own choice as well. Isn't it a bit judgemental to say there is anything wrong here?

It would be interesting if the article contained interviews with the women to get their take on all of this. I suspect if this becomes a trend we will get some more balanced reporting.

Hey, that's a nice picture. I saved it. You never know when a picture of blue ice may be needed. I figure, its better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it!

I am sure that beetleBoss would be glad to come and help, but without the internet she will just have to watch tv and go through internet withdrawls. I just talked to her on the phone and she is not a happy camper with no internet. her smilies are frowning :(
